Some one has told me that it is a bad idea to promote our websites on social media. He said it is always better if they fing out our sites themselves on search engines rather than having to be directing them to the sites.

I do not agree that promoting website on social media is bad. Though, I prefer public forum to social media when it come website promotion, I disagree that it's bad to promote website on social media. What you are doing by promoting your website on social is driving traffic to it. The traffic is not organic but it'll help.
