Which is the best domain extension for SEO? I was having this doubt in mind for quite some time. Later I read an article that says an appropriate domain extension can help us to boost our SEO rankings. The thumb rule is that never go for region specific extensions and opt for Generic Top Level Domains (gTLD). So, these general domains are searchable for a large set of audience than a domain extension which is only applicable to a specific region or country. Domain extension like .com, .biz, .edu, .info, .net, .org etc are examples of gTLDs.

But this will not work out for a company that wants to sell products only in a certain part of the world. So, whenever possible just go a gTLD than a region specific one.

In my opinion, (because I am no expert when it comes to SEO), the domain extension has little to no effect when it comes to ranking because it always boils down to either the tags or the content of a certain page. But I was thinking, since most popular pages/sites have the generic ones (.com, .net, .org), most tools are tailored to really work well with such domains.

But then again, for me, no mattar what your domain name is, if your content is rubbish, you'll most probably get rubbish rankings.

Just my two cents. :)

Yes there is a lot of difference between domain extension for ranking in Google. Although the com ranks in top of Google and other Tlds shows less authority.

What I am seeing in these days, no one buying org, info, biz domains as they are being left for free.
You should build with great content, even the domain matters as it is the main thing in Seo, the rest other things such as backlinks may work in major role.

I think it is quite simple. If you use a region specific domain your site will be featured in the local Google search engine. For example if your business is only targeted for Indian people you can go for .in domain extension. Google will understand that you are interested to rank higher in Google.in. But as you know a region/country specific domain will have limitation in terms of visibility in a search engine. Otherwise if you use gTLD you will have a wider audience and better visibility in Google.com.

As long as you are using gTLD domain, I don't think that domain extension matters in terms of SEO and search engine ranking. For example, Google treats .com, .net, .info equally. However, Google may rank .gov and .org higher than other extension (because Google gives importance to these extension considering the fact that these extensions are most;ly used by trusted organization).

The providers of the alternative TLDs usually suggest that there isn't, but I never see those kinds of sites ranked as highly as .com or .net sites, even when they have stellar content and should be if it were not about the extension or other considerations. That might change with an update to Google's algorithms for ranking web pages and the domains you use for them, but at the present time it looks like they give .com, .net. and .org priority still.

Certain national extensions like .us or .co.uk will cause a website to rank higher in the US or UK, respectively. However, note that certain national extensions like .io are treated like gTLDs. Nonetheless, I have heard that the hosting of the website plays a role on whether or not a domain will rank more in a certain nation. For instance, a UK hosted website might be considered British and rank better in the UK. Does anyone have more info on this idea?

Well,I think content matters most in ranking than the domain extension.one might have an appropriate domain extension but with a copy and paste content or content that isn't worthwhile,I don't think such a site will be rank higher than sites with reputable facts as content,so I don't think so.

Most time google recognize and reccommend me sites in my region, they rank higher than site from other region or perhaps it just simply matched my location ?,, not sure as i am a newbie, i think it depends on your target market/exposure.

yes it affect but it differ from what you making if you make regional site , then use local tld which make better raking when searching by those specific region

mostly googles firstly checks you IP and location then recommends you content from their, if you use VPN and search for stuffs again in google the things will be different

Google might link your website to the audience of that nation if it has a country-specific domain extension. If you want to score highly in search results for a certain country and are targeting a local audience, this may be useful.

The domain extension you choose can have an impact on your search engine optimization (SEO) ranking. It's not as simple as saying that one extension is better than another. There are a number of factors that affect SEO, and the extension is just one of them.
