Do the authorities have the right to require copies of your emails for a running investigation? And if those emails were deleted, is it possible for the email provider to recover them? I know there is a certain period for companies to retain data on their servers. But I'm not sure if that period depends on the provider or is the same for everyone.

emails won't be deleted by default, but you can set a default time for your mails to be deleted, that is if you feel they might be too much overtime.

Microsoft has changed their Exchange Server hosting This change in Office 365 hosting allows users to keep the deleted items up to 'forever' It also offers the ability to configure the default MRM Messaging Records Managementdeleted items retention policy By using this option you can control how long does Office 365 keep emails in the Deleted Items folder Now, MS Office 365 users are capable to use the same option like On-premises Exchange Administrators who can increase their retention time from 30 to 24855 days.

I don't actually know if emails could be recovered by an individual but I think that technical experts can recover those emails. Personally, when my inbox is too enormous, I actually delete my emails that are not needed to trash and from the trash I delete them permanently. I don't like having fluffy loads of emails that don't add any value.

There are a lot of people who use the excuse of sending and receiving emails for them to be accomplishing terrorist or also be harassing people on the internet. They can be very rare cases where your email list can be hold by your hosting provider or you can be investigated especially if they think that you are using it to scam people. Most items everything is usually settled within a day or two and you can go back to normal.
