Is it illegal to open an PayPal account with fake name? Thank you!

I suggest you stay away from any such mistakes as PayPal will easily find it out when they match your bank account/credit card name with your PayPal account name. They may ban you as soon as they notice it. I wonder why somebody ever want to open a PayPal account with a fake name! A PayPal account is very important for online life as it deals with your money transaction.

Even if you give a fake name, that has to be matched with your bank account/credit card name. I think that is quite impossible.

I use my brother's name to open a new Paypal account, based in South Africa, because he lives there and I don't. I put in all his information, but I used to own card to verify the account and it worked. Also due to some issues, Paypal did advice to open another account from other African countries, since my country can not receive payments, so I think it is allowed somewhat, if it is being used genuinely.

I've never tried it so I am not sure if using fake details will work but I don't think it's necessary. I believe you can just open a new email address and a new Paypal account linked to the new address.

It is against their terms of service. Whether it is actually illegal might depend on how you used the account and whether it reached the level of being fraudulent. I am pretty sure they would detect you eventually. At which point you would lose not only your account but any funds that were I it at the time. So... just not a good idea.

You can open a fake paypal account. You can even send or receive money from your fake account. However, if you account is caught, your funds will be frozen. It is clearly mentioned on their TOS

Paypal verifies our PAN card number. Name in the PAN card, Bank account and Paypal account should be the same. If you use the same fake name in all these, then it is OK.

As others have said, you can open an account in any name you want, but when it comes to using that account, how are you going to go about it? Any cards, phone numbers, addresses and bank accounts you have won't correspond to that name, so if you are lucky enough not to get caught, you'll end up with a PayPal account with funds in it that you can't transfer to anywhere.

You can open an account on a fake name, but it will end up when they ask to verify the account. My suggestion is never do such things as it is your money putting in a high risk.
There is a method to verify using CC, but you will be getting caught easily. If they ask you to verify through phone, address, documents, then what shall you do in this situation.
Don't waste your time and money by using such illegal tricks. Looks like you want to scam someone.

Absolutely, opening a PayPal account with a fake name would be the most stupid thing one can do. After all why on earth somebody wanted to open a fake account anyway when it is almost sure that he will be caught in future. As already mentioned by @suresh, PayPal got sophisticated methods to sense any movements to cheat the system. After all it is something related to money transaction which needs to be looked at very seriously.

At least it is not possible in our country as they can catch it at the time of verifying the account. But PayPal follows different rules for different countries, hence don't know about other countries.

Doing something fraudulent like this will not go very far with Paypal and I am thankful for that. I love my Paypal account, it's very useful and such a great idea. I agree with everything everyone else said. I buy online quite a bit and I seriously use that account a great deal. I am glad they have included all the security checks they have..shows me they are serious. I just wonder who came up with this website. They were just genius..like a bank account online. I sometimes use my Paypal as a savings account....you know saving money for future purchases or bills.

I would think that it would pretty much be impossible because it is tied to your bank account, so unless you are able to have a bank account in a fake name then you are probably out of luck. I would go ahead and stay away from trying anything like that, because these days these companies are pretty onto people who are trying to pull a fast one on them.

Exactly and PayPal does verify your banking information and will not add it if it can not be verified. This is the feature you use when you want to use your bank account to purchase online..as well as receiving payments to the account and withdrawing into your bank account.

You give out a lot of details when opening a PayPal account and I think they will catch up with you sooner or later.
You give out the credit card number and name in credit card plus identification documents. So just for not try to fool PayPal. It is like trying to fool a bank. It never ends well.

Just on another note aswell, opening an account with PayPal under a fake name will be the same legally as walking into an high street bank and trying to do the same, and I doubt your risk doing that.

Fraud is fraud, online and offline and you'll be looking at criminal charges in the worst case scenario, on top of everything else.

It depends on your country. If you belong to countries like India you will be caught red-handed immediately as India's policy is quite strict, you must have matching PAN card, bank details etc. But, some countries are quite lax so you can open a paypal account and the chances of getting caught is minimal as long as you don't associate a bank account with it. This is okay when you are planning to use your PayPal funds directly to invest or buy something.

I would definitely not recommend doing this. While it could be possible you'd get away with it for a short time, it's just not worth the risk since sooner or later you will be found out.

One more thing you may not realise is that should you register with Paypal under a fake name and should you have been registered with, say, eBay under your real name even 5 years ago, it's very likely Paypal would still be able to match the two together. As a result, you could end up with banned Paypal and eBay accounts, and any other website/service that is owned by those companies.

It is possible to do but I wouldn't recommend it if your account gets frozen you can't really do anything about it. When it comes time to withdrawing your money you might have problems if the two names don't match up.
