Ever since the Edward Snowden fiasco, one is really finding it hard to repose faith in web hosting companies based in the US. Additionally, in the US, there are quite a lot of laws undermining the essence of privacy. Most European countries are now being used as alternatives to the US for web hosting by individuals and enterprises alike. Their pricing is not much higher than that of standard web hosts like Hostgator, Godaddy, Namecheap, etc. I think it's much better to use any of these countries for hosting your website if you do not want your site to get shut down someday by the annoying US agencies on flimsy grounds.

If you do illegal stuff online like sharing copyrighted files for sure you don't get covered by web hosting outside US either, there's offshore web hosting but still you ain't fully covered. And what is illegal it won't last much online. That's for sure!

Whoever the piratebay is using, that's who I want haha! They seem to be able to keep their servers and data more safe from the world than anyone else. ;)

Yes, even though they do not host any content or files and just share torrents only, they have had many countries try to use their police or military to shut them down or stop them wherever they ran it. They managed to get away most times but one. They were able to keep the site going still, though. I think they were in Romania for a while, and before that in Sweden before they distributed to places like Istanbul, the Philippines, and other countries. They're all over the place, but they were in The Netherlands for a very long time before it was ever an issue. Years.

When I decided to host my websites, I did not check where the host was based. After my websites were hosted then only I knew the host was based in the US. I don't choose a host based on location, I choose based on pricing and reputation. I once was checking a host which was said to offer free domain name with one of their packages. I did not like their package, alter I found it was Austria based web host.

Agreed, I wouldn't be very concerned about where exactly it was being hosted as long as the service was cost effective and reputable.
IMHO having to circumvent copyright troubles by going offshore would be more trouble than it was worth for any site.

The closer it can be to your target audience. having some lag on your site can really make a dent. Unless it's something they can't find anywhere else they won't hang around for very long.

I selected Iceland in the poll.

There is a website called orangewebsite in Iceland, which has pretty good policies regarding content removal and privacy. Let me mention some of the most important parts:
We are a free speech hosting provider and, thus, the cost of that is that there may be content hosted on our servers that some people might find offensive. Once we start taking down such web sites, then we are no longer a free speech hosting service provider.

There is also an anonymous sign-up process:
Can I sign up 100% anonymously to order web hosting or domain registration solutions from you?

Yes you can! The only piece of information we ask you to provide is a valid email address. You can pay for all orders by BitCoin.

Another positive point is how they handle your personal data when a complain happens:
How do you respond if you receive a complaint regarding site content hosted on your servers?

If the site does not contain anything illegal and if its content is not against our TOS, we ignore such complaints. The privacy of our clients is really important to us. We never release information to a third party.

Recommended if you need some protection!

Well, people don't really take into consideration where it hosting country is resident, people are after better services and cheap cost of the service, but if to choose a country maybe it will be Norway because data privacy, though it in Europe but they are free to make their own privacy laws without interferences by other EU countries.
