General Overview
Rev is a San Francisco based company founded in 2010. The company contracts remote workers from all over the world to perform transcription, translation, captioning and subtitling services on behalf of its clients.

The Jobs
The jobs are divided into three main categories:
Transcriptionist: As there are more clients requiring transcription service, this area features a lot of the job offers at Rev. In this category, you will be listening to audio files and transcribing what you hear based on the given Style Guide.

Captioner: In this position, you will be viewing video files and adding captions at specific times of the video. On occasions, it may be necessary to do an online search to verify correct spelling of certain names and unfamiliar words.

Translator: You will need to be fluent in more than one language to qualify for this position. Your job will be to accurately translate documents, research paper, instruction manuals, etc. into the specified language.

The Application Process
In order to work for Rev you have to be at least 18 years of age. The application process involves a grammar and English language test to determine applicant's suitability for the jobs. For transcription positions, there is a short guide on how to transcribe for Rev. This is followed by a sample audio for applicants to transcribe using the instructions given in the guide. The process for captioners is a simple extension of the transcription procedure. In addition to the general test, there will be instructional videos on how to caption and subtitle a document. Again, you will be given sample documents to work on, which will be a deciding factor in whether you are accepted or not. If you are applying to be a translator, you will also have to provide evidence of your translation skills. After submitting your application, you can expect to receive an email within a few days, informing you on whether you qualified or not.

Working At Rev
Upon acceptance, you will be given a short tour on how the system works. You can then visit your workspace to view the number of available projects to you. Simply select whichever assignment is of interest to you. Here you will be given details on how much will be paid for completion of the project.

There are three levels of transcribers at Rev:

Rookie Level - This is where everyone starts out. You will only work on the shorter projects at this stage. At this level, all your work will be reviewed and graded with feedback for further improvement.

Revver Level - You will be promoted to this level once you have scored well at the Rookie Level. Your earnings will be 25% more and you will be able to choose the work you want and continue to get feedback.

Revver+Level - Here you will get to choose jobs before those at the Revver level. You also have the option of taking a Graders test, where you will be paid to assess the work of others.

The Grading System
The grading system is based on two factors:

Accuracy - this has to do with the way in which words are transcribed and whether they are attributed to the right person in the conversation.

Formatting - this focuses on communicating words in an understandable and easy to read manner.

The Pay System
Payment is made every Monday via PayPal. The pay rate is based on the category of job performed and is currently listed as follows:

Transcription: $0.40 - $0.65 per audio minute transcribed
Captioning: $0.40 - $0.75 per video minute captioned
Translator: $0.05 - $0.07 per word translated

Complaints About Rev
One of the general complaints we found online was of accounts being mysteriously closed, even for those who have maintained a high quality score. Another complaint was that there are inconsistencies in the grading system.

Thanks for this @to7update, I just tried it and I think it was taking me too long to do the transcribing part. I'm not too slow on the keyboard but I couldn't hear it very well. I had to play about with the volume till I could get it to a comfortable level.

I know my spelling may not be perfect, but as I type a little fast I have to go back and make my corrections. This was taking too long for me to do during the transcription part of the test. So ultimately I closed down the tab. I didn't like the music they were playing behind the speaking either, it made it difficult to hear properly and I was straining to hear the words over it. I wouldn't like to start work for them and they play music behind all the transcription jobs. That rather seems like a ploy to get you to not hear something correctly. I wonder why they would do that, what benefit does it give to play music over narration that they want to be transcribed? Surely if they were serious they wouldn't put music behind the scenes as they would want the words heard properly?

I think they played the music to add difficulty to the task. Mine had all kinds of traffic noise on the background. Not all of the actual submitted recordings are ideal for transcription either.
I found the handling on Rev hard too, some people use a pedals to pause/play the audio, that way they don't have to take their hands off the keyboard and focus on typing it right.

I've been captioning and transcribing for Rev for about 6 months now. It definitely takes some time to get your groove, but once I got comfortable, it isn't odd for me to make about $35 to $40 a month. I'm a mid-tier revver, though, so I earn a little more per audio/video minute than beginners.

I'm sure you could make $245 a month if you solely focused on captioning and transcribing frequently. Jobs tend to ebb and flow depending on when clients put their stuff up to be captioned/transcribed, so don't be surprised if you find some months really slow.

Hey everyone, thought I'd drop a snapshot of some of my earning from my time transcribing for Rev. (If you're interesting in applying, check them out here: rev.com) I was really into the gig in mid-2016 when I wasn't in school, and it wasn't unusual for me to earn close to $40 a week.

I was a mid-level Revver, and did more captioning than I did transcribing. So keep in mind that generally, for every 1 minute of video I did, it would take me probably 4 or 5 minutes to type the captions accurately, break them up, and align them correctly with the video. So in reality, that "18minutes 3seconds" time was probably close to an hour and half of work. Still not a bad payout for that, though.

I want to warn anyone and everyone who has recently started working with the Captioning/Transcription company Rev, or is thinking about applying for a work at home position with them that they are a scam and one of the sneakiest companies I have ever worked for! I started with the company on May 3rd. For the first 150 minutes you caption, it is pretty much like a probation period. Every project you caption gets checked over thoroughly by their QAs (which is totally understandable) who also grade your work on three different aspects: accuracy, formatting, and alignment. In order to become what they call Revvers, you must reach specific metrics on each of the above mentioned areas. Last night I hit my 150th minute and was psyched bc my metrics surpassed the goals I needed to meet.. their highest metric is a 5, which is what I had received on all three. This meant I was done my probation time, I'd have more options to choose from to caption, and I'd be paid 20% more than what I was receiving as a "rookie." The second I submitted my last "rookie" project, I received an email telling me I was no longer able to pick up projects and I was being let go indefinitely bc I had not met their standards- my metrics were too low! I was, and still am, in shock! My metrics were too low??? Bold-face lie! I couldn't get any higher marks if I wanted to! I emailed, called, emailed again and called again and "there's nothing they can do." I busted my ass, put in a lot of time, did exceptional work for them, only to get kicked to the curb so they wouldn't have to pay me an extra five cents a minute to caption. Please heed my warning. I am not the only this has happened too apparently. Come to find out, this is how they work. Check out Reddit if you don't believe me. I understand. I could just be some disgruntled employee. I promise you, I am not. I am just trying to save you all from making the mistake I made, and for wasting my time and effort on this ridiculous company. Should you choose to ignore this, just remember, I gave you fair, honest warning. Good luck and best wishes!

Wow! I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience with them. I personally never heard bad things about them. Except that they often like to reject people which is acceptable.

Take a look at this thread. A member of the forums posted a payment proof and he has been working for them for a while. He seems very happy so I don't know what happened with your case.

I saw his post which is what really made my blood boil. He's probably a long ling long time employee, trying to rope people in to work for pennies for them until it's to for them to own up to their end of the deal which is take you off probation, pay you 20% more and allow you to choose any captioning project you like. They'd rather pay naive people like myself, 90cents for a seven minute video for 150 minutes and then discard you. They have ads all over the place that they are hiring and it's not a difficult application process. Now TranscribeMe, another work from home company I transcribe for, they are very selective and only 15% of their applicants get hired. I'm just going to stick with them. After last night, I really started researching Rev and they are not a very reputable company. Shame on me for not learning about them first. This is why I had to let others know not to be fooled by them. All hell will break loose if they don't pay me for the work I did this past week (which is something else I recently read abt them.... they don't like to pay once they terminate). I have some bad news for them if they think they are going to not pay me for the work I did. Seriously look up Rev Reviews from reputable sources... really really bad...

That's discouraging that that happened to you, but I can assure you that I'm not an employee for Rev. If you've already called and emailed them about it, then I don't know what else to tell you to do. I've never been in that situation. I have perfect scores across the board in transcription (of which I'm still a rookie) and very high marks in captioning (of which I'm a Revver).

From what I've read on Reddit and here now, it seems like something odd is going on. You're not the only one to be let go without notice while still maintaining a near perfect score after your probation time. I wish I knew the answer to your problem or how to resolve it, but I don't have any authority at Rev. All I know is that I've transcribed and captioned quite a bit of stuff for them, and they've always paid me on time and in full.

Thanks for responding. As you mentioned in your response, you are still a Rookie with Rev. I had hit my 159th minute with them (to be exact) and the second that happened, instead of moving me up into the Revver status, they terminated me. I wish I could post a pic of my scores as well, however I can't get into my account to get them. But I assure you, my pic would have looked like a complete copy of yours. I was on a roll and definitely excelling! So this is why I am so frustrated. They have already paid me twice before, but I have this feeling that I won't see any more funds deposited into my pay pal acct for the last couple projects I did for them. I have emailed them twice daily and tried calling but can't get anywhere. I don't give up so easily and am determined to make sure this doesn't continue to happen to anyone else. But, you did your research, and are now also aware of how low this company will sink. It's disgusting to me. Isn't it enough for them that they get away with paying next to nothing but, in this economy, we have to take whatever we can get. Their behavior and work ethic is uncalled for and disrespectful. Anyway, I do hope you have better luck than I did once you complete all the minutes needed to move up in their ranks. Please keep me posted, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks.

Sure thing. I was originally hired as a captioner, which is where I put the majority of my time in at Rev. I picked up transcription a little, but I find that I enjoy captioning better, which is why I haven't progressed pass Rookie stage there. I'm actually really hesitant to get my 150 hours now, and will probably just focus even more of my time on captioning instead.
