You search for a domain name and it appears that will expire soon.

First chill, the owner might renew it just before the expiration date, meanwhile, you keep monitor it, if he did not renew it that domain now enters in the so-called grace period, usually the owner has another 30 days to renew it, if not the domain will be auctioned by the registrar.

If you want to step ahead, you can contact the owner right now and ask him if he wants to sell it, if yes you can offer hi-lo bids till you guys both happy.

I always suggest using escrow service when dealing with domains flipping, especially when domain worth $500+.

What's your strategy to pick up expired domains?

Well, this might be a silly question, but I am really a newbie in web hosting. If the owner is happy, how does he "transfer" the domain to you? Should he contact the hosting company that he bought the domain from to make the transfer? How if you might want to buy the domain from another company, or does this matter?

I am actually thinking of switching my hosting company, but I have not idea how to make the "transfer". I wonder if I should wait for the domain to be expired, then I register it at the new hosting company, but this sounds silly to me and I think there should be a better way, right?

@kaka135 when you switch hosting you need to update your DNS(Domain Name Sytem) to point to new IPs, to the new host.

You don't need to transfer the domain, you should never let the domain expire, you will lose it, you must renew it before the expiration date.

@MrB I think I have done that once. Thanks for telling me this, I was figuring how I can transfer my domain to another hosting. I have to get it done by today, as it will be expired tomorrow.

Renew that domain now, you don't need to transfer domain when you move to other webhosting company.
