Physical CD sales continues to plummet that's why album sales of music artists are going down. It was almost replaced by digital downloads by which iTunes is the major platform. However, even digital albums are going down and music streaming like Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Deezer, etc are the ones being turned to by music consumers. Gone were the days when music fans flock record stores for the release of a new album. Of course, having a physical CD is a good thing for sentimental purposes.
Though, do you think music streaming will take over physical CDs?

I see this possibly happening very soon. Look at what Netflix and Showmax has achieved with Video on demand. Yep. Music CD is going out the door soon.

That's a very nice analysis. Music CD's are now thing of past in India. Last time I bought a CD cassette was 5 years ago. Present with huge penetration of internet services and specially after Jio telecom's introduction, India is rapidly becoming digital. And I think that the same is the case all over the world.

Digital music is in demand. And there are lot of companies like spotify, Di.fm and few others are coming up. So you can see that people around the world are going digital. And the subscriptions are also cheap. So you can definitely ditch the physical CDs. You can however keep some songs on USB. And that should be more than enough for the listening of songs.

I don't listen to CDs, I'm a certified Vinyl Junkie with over 1300 titles in my collection. I guess some people prefer digital music, but many of us think there is nothing better than taking that slab of wax and letting the needle ride.

I don't prefer music streaming because once a while the advertisement will appear in some kind of way. They encourage you to do a pay apps and when the times are bad and the company rely so much of advertisement. You will have to pay again in some way. And talking about streaming, you are also wasting a lot of data while you are outside your home. Or you will have to subscribe wifi that serve the region of you country. All that charges and separate subscriptions, to be frank if you are living within your means. That money could be like 50% of your monthly groceries to spend on.

Music CD's would soon be out. Their only purpose soon would be more like a collectors item. Like vinyls or tapes. Maybe because of innovations. and having a song on your cp or playing it on music streaming apps is much more easier and lot more hassle free

The last time I bought a CD was more than a decade ago. I started downloading right after.. Remember LimeWire? I was very frequent on there back then. Then there came Spotify (sometimes I use Deezer) and i don't think i could ask for more than that.

I'll try to talk about something else related to this thread. You're talking about music streaming and Physical CDs.. But I really think that Music digital downloads will overtake both. Listening to musics without needing a CD and without needing an instant internet connection is the best thing that could happen. Of course, i'm not promoting the illegal downloads, i'm just talkintg about the bought digital albums.

I LOVE CDs, and would buy them more often if I could afford them. However, it is SO tempting to just grab a song I like off YouTube, rather than pay for it. (I know .... shame, shame!)

I do wonder when CDs will become a thing of the past, because it seems they only appeal to old farts like me. (I'm almost 60 years old!)

Dont worry, I download a song or two from youtube sometimes too.

I still prefer vinyl over digital...I'll only buy a CD if it isn't available on a 12" vinyl format.

I have a collection of CDs but the sad part is I hardly listen to music as it disturbs my own thoughts which I find to be more interesting and fulfilling. That apart my activity leaves little time for lending my ear to music.

I think physical CDs are already being replaced. It makes me sad. However, I do like digital downloads cuz there are some physical albums that I can't find at my local CD store and having to get it shipped is much too expensive.
I don't really like music streaming subscriptions. I use the free version when I'm online but when I'm on the bus or train, I would have my mp3 player on listening to the digital downloads of my fav albums. :)

With more and more people having their own smartphone and laptop, they will use it to download digital music online. It is not like the old days where these gadgets havent been invented yet

In my opinion, there are still plenty of people that like owning a physical copy. I still like records, CD, and tape. I go to thrift stores and find some real gems.

I'm surprised that people still buy any CDs. I have a collection of 30-40 CDs but I never listen to it - I can download or stream any song I can't think of and I don't see the point of buying a CD which I'll listen 1-2 times and forget about it.

Exactly. I have 1050 albums in my vinyl collection and I am always buying used (and new) records to add to it.
