Simple Machines (SMF) has a slight or maybe huge advantage with the fact it has a theme and mod installer built in. Note, even XenForo, a premium brand, doesn't have that. Now, looking at MyBB, we see it has a rating system installed. There is no need for a mod to get it. Finally, phpBB has an alert system, something missing from SMF and MyBB.

Anyhow, what pros and cons do you see with these free software brands?

Hey there,
I would go for the MyBB one. It has lots of mods and actually does look good with the basic templates. Plus, customizing it isn't that hard.

I will install phpBB script now and will come back with a review, It's a free and simple script that doesn't require any subscription and don't forget that its an open source software so there is so many free templates and extensions for it :)

Free forum software is free so this is actually an advantage. I have been using free forum software in the past and phpBB has been excellent, I can't fault it. There are many templates and extensions which you can get for any free forum software, so overlall, it's great.
