Want to run Windows software or application but can't do so because you're using an operating system other than Windows? Why not try Wine then? Wine is emulator-like program that will enable you to run windows software on Linux, MacOS or BSD operating systems. Unlike an emulator, Wine is technically more like a compatibility layer that translates Windows' program's calls into that of POSIX calls, enabling the supported operating systems to execute Windows programs as if they're run on their native platform. This compatibility layer technique also offers other advantages, mainly the ability to run Windows programs without performance penalties that common when using emulators. The software was born in 1993, at the time the development of this program was spearheaded by Bob Amstadt, though later the project leadership changed and now under the leadership of Alexandre Julliard. Wine is both free and open source, the project is funded through donation and partial corporate sponsorship.
