Would a beer and wine delivery business be successful as an online or offline endeavor?

Are there any laws which govern or prevent this, or is it perfectly legal to do like delivery of Chinese food or takeaway to one's door?

I was thinking about something like this years ago, but hadn't had too much time to check into it. I'm on the fence on whether I'd still want to, or if I'd just invest in it instead.

I'm sure there are caveats to implementing something like this, like if someone blames being drunk and what they do on the delivery driver or the alcohol they might sell them online or otherwise.

What is the best way to make money with this type of business in the US, UK, or Europe? Is it already legal to do in parts of Asia and other countries, needs licensing, or no?

It's apparently legal to delivery online-purchased liquors in the US and in Canada (just look at sites like SkipTheDishes and Delivery.com), granted you have the required license (it's the same for both online and offline selling). There are probably other laws in Asia and Europe, so don't quote me on that, but as long as you have the proper license (it's obligatory once you hit a certain limit of sold alcohol, but it's better to get it from the get-to) you should experience no trouble.

Now, about getting started. Building a company like this from the ground up doesn't sound like a really good idea, since you'll need to face a remarkable investment (supposing you're going to run it both offline and online, you'll have to pay for the local, stock, various expenses, delivery, etc.); also, even if you do manage to set up a website and get everything running, you'll still have to face geographical limitations, which will great limit your income.
If you want to get a taste of what this business is like, try to apply as a delivery courier for one of the two websites I mentioned before (there's a form there). The managers over there could also answer your questions.

This is a very good business idea, this can be executed both online and offline.I don't know about online fees which I think wouldn't be there except the normal fees to the site owners that you want to use as your store but offline you need some papers to begin with.you will need liquor license and certificate of trading in liquor and all those kind of fees.So you need to do your home work well.

My concern is having the budget and the distribution. you can have the wine business but how youa re going to handle the distribution. and also the customers. getting customers to such business is hard part. then things are much harder from distribution end.

There was a company in my city used
to do it years ago ( they went bust).
I used to bike for them occasionally
for spare cash. Noticed the other week
there's a new one just started as well!

These were the downsides at the time I
worked it... Sorry this is so long but
if you're considering this as a business

Subject to UK off licence regulations so
you couldn't legally sell booze before
10am or after 10pm... Sadly this means
most people who live near a shop will
just go and buy it themselves or get it
delivered with their shopping from the
supermarket cheaper!

Licencing regulations vary from city to
city and in the UK the laws are different
in England than in Scotland etc. I used
to own a pub every year the licencing
regulations got tougher and more costly
to implement.

Underage teens using someone elses
ID to buy booze! Use a credit card to
buy but when delivery turns up they
find a bunch of angry teenagers and
no sign of the card holder or anyone
legally old enough to buy it. This
happened every shift I ever worked!!

Sometimes we were accosted by
teens before we got to the actual door!
The people in the house didn't order
anything the teenagers just used
random addresses and a stolen or
borrowed card!

The drivers were then faced with breaking
the law by handing it over or walking away
and risking a kicking...Not a nice situation
when there's 15 of them and one of you :)

In the UK if someone working for an
off licence sells to underage both the
person and the company can be fined.
You'd be amazed how many would hand
over the booze to a 15 year old who
claims their dad is in the shower!!

We used to test them we
never told anyone I only knew as I was
friends with the boss. He reckoned 6
out of 10 would hand it over even if
there was no fear for safety!!

Lastly there's very little profit in alcohol
in UK. People will moan if they have to
pay more than they would from Tesco!
Pubs and off licences are closing daily.
as they struggle to compete with the
supermarkets for price!

Food is profitable there's very few
restrictions for delivery other than
insurance! Alcohol is a minefield!!

Sounds interesting. If you can manage the legal documents require starting wine business then it can be proved as most profitable.

I know little about wine, one of my brothers does this. He has a retail shop. And one day I was helping him to open the shop for one hour only maybe. And the sell was of at least 2 lakh rs for the hour which is around $3300.

I don't think distribution would be difficult, the same way other items are shipped for distribution,it can also be used for wine ditribution, the only snag will be more accurate handling because of its nature, other than that it can be shipped any way.

it can be difficult because people say things and do another things. and it is one of the classic distribution and promotion problem. so he needs to be find proper flow for it. and then it can get done. it's not typical UPS stuff here, it's wine business distribution.

there are other appropriate carrier for stuff like this apart from ups,it all about using the appropriate channel of distribution and it will perfectly fit the wine business delivery.I believe people are already carrying out the business it just o find out how it is effectively done.

I don't consume that but its hell a lot of great business and can help one earn good money but you need to comply with all the taxing regulations of your respective governments.

It is legal, but depends on the country. There are some country that is prohibiing or limiting the consumption of liquor. Here in my country, it is totally legal for as long as you have the papers
to present like business permit and BIR.

Cool idea, I think it has a lot of potential. Are you doing this to make a little extra money or do you plan on turning it a bigger business? Make sure you read all the laws and bylaws you can find on the issue. In some places you wont be able to sell alcohol after a certain hour, depending on your particular license. Are you completely positive you need a license to deliver alcohol .

As of now,our government is raising the tax for beverages including alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Though it is legal to do such business here, many have been discouraged to continue due to the high tax that is being implemented.

There it is possible to start a part time wine delivery business too, just to see how things will work out and if it is enough profit from it,to cover all the costs. If it is worth it,it can be made this type of business full time too.

The sales of wines and alcoholic beverages increases during holiday season such as Christmas and New year. We can take a short time business during those times to be sure that this can cover our capital and have good profit from it.

Wine and alcoholic products are always in demand, while other type of deliver services have their ups and downs. It is important to choose the right location, and this type of delivery business tends to have low investment risks and high profit returns.

Not the same case
for my country. Aloholic beverages here are only indemand during holiday season or when there is feast. For months like april-may, softdrinks and juices are more indemand due to the hot weather.

Well,it depends from country to country. That is why important to choose the right location for this type of business,so the wine business entrepreneur knows for sure, that his products will all the year be in demand.

I am thinking one of the best way to earn more from wine delivery is to find a catering service which you can supply wine, so whenever they will be having an event, they will contact you to go for bulk orders, wines are best serve during special occasions like birthdays, wedding, anniversary or reunions.

This is a great business adventure and I know a few people who sell wine for a living. They make a good living out of this and it seems very profitable from what I can see. You can try affiliate programs with a few big names and see how it goes from there. It is competitive to say the least.
