So I just learned about the magical world of free domains, but something I realized is the possibility of these websites being buried in SEO ranks due to the domain not being considered SEO friendly. If this is a stupid question, well you gotta know you are talking to a pretty SEO ignorant person. So basically what I mean to ask is, would SEO performance be affected by using free domains such as .tk or those provided from services like Freenom?

Not actually but it is still better if you go for an inexpensive domain atleast you own it and icann provides guarantee for it so its worth getting one with 2-3 bucks to be honest

The amount of money that you use to purchase a domain is not going to affect the search engine ranking in any way. It is important also that you should buy top quality domains because that is what website users normally check in order to know if they should trust the website's certificate or not.

Using of a free domain is definitely going to affect your search engine optimization performance but that does not mean that it is automatically going to regulate it. Free domain name cannot have effects on search engine optimisation for your website provided you do things right. if you target extremely low key word on website, you will definitely rank higher on Google search engine. I have seen a lot of blogspot website ranking on the first page of Google for some search terms. There are lot of tools out there you can make use of to find low competitive keywords in your name. I prefer AHREFS because it comes with a lot of parameters which you can set to discover zero competitive keywords in any niche. If you cannot afford this software you can go for the lesser one which is SEMrush.

Using a free domain for your website would not affect your search engine optimization, it doesn't have any consequences whatsoever. A free domain doesn't means one's website would be buried in search engine optimization ranks due to the domain not considered as SEO friendly. I feel it is better you use a domain you own though.

People don't like free domains since those often are spam web sites. So those sites is harder rank because people don't like it. Technical side don't have anything with it.
Also people on internet think only com domains are trustworth. Also most people assume com is domain extension so when you say about some site name they just add com domain.
