I recently created a new blog and since I know Meta Description can increase a site's CTRs I added a Meta Description which I believe aptly describes my site. A description that would get readers to click on the link and visit my blog.

But when I search for the blog [using the URL] the meta description doesn't show up in the search results. Instead of it, there's some snippet from an article I posted on the blog three days ago.

Is there a reason why Google isn't using my meta description?

Hi! Apparently, this happens to a lot of websites and it's called "Snippet." Snippets come from:
  • Your Meta-Description
  • Open Directory Project Data
  • Home Page or On-Page
Although it can be difficult to make Google recognise your meta-description, there's a few things you can do:
  • Include your primary keyword at the beginning of the meta-description.
  • Make sure that your meta-descriptions aren't a copy of one another. Make each one is unique and personalised.
  • Make sure that your description best fits your website. Google is likely changing your meta-description because it doesn't think that it is a match for your website.
  • Let it be. We really cannot control everything and sometimes we just need to concentrate on other parts of our site.

Is there a reason why Google isn't using my meta description?
This question requires so additional information. If I may ask, what was the last time you updated your site meta and then performed a search? As far as I know, many factors may hinder that. If you created a site description which is similar to other ranking sites, chances are that your meta won't show up. Additionally, if your site isn't yet indexed, it may also not show up. And or, you may be using the default site show up which may require you to use a plugin like Yoast SEO to make some adjustments.

There are several reasons why Google might not use your meta description:
  1. Duplicate or missing meta descriptions: If your website has multiple pages with the same or no meta description, Google may choose to ignore them. It's important to have a unique and relevant meta description for each page of your website.
  2. Length: Google generally displays only the first 155 characters of a meta description. If your meta description is too long, it may be truncated and not fully displayed in search results.
  3. Relevance: If the content of your page doesn't match the description in your meta description, Google may choose to ignore it. Make sure your meta description accurately describes the content of your page.
  4. Keywords: If your meta description doesn't contain any relevant keywords, it may be ignored by Google. Make sure your meta description includes keywords related to the content of your page.
  5. Dynamic content: If your website generates dynamic content, such as product descriptions, Google may not be able to crawl and index it properly.
  6. Caching issue: If your meta description was changed recently, it may take some time for Google to update its cache and display the new description. You can use the Fetch as Google tool in Search Console to request that Google re-crawl your page and update its cache.
If you've tried these solutions and your meta description is still not being used by Google, you may want to seek help from a professional or reach out to Google support for further assistance.
