A sitemap is a diagram that contains the information on your website that aids in the discovery, crawling, and indexing of all of its content by search engines. Additionally, sitemaps inform search engines which pages on your website are most relevant.

There won't be easy way to get navigated to sites when there is no sitemap. It is always a directory just as its name suggests. However, apart from improving the visibility of our websites and aid Google crawling, it may serve no function.

All the CMS are implementing sitemap xml and robots txt unless you are devellopping the website on your own technology and forget to develop this part this is a common problem but the big majorities are using ready scripts so doesn't fall into this problem from the beginning as I think so.

A site map, also known as a sitemap, is a file that lists all the pages and content on a website in a hierarchical manner. It is designed to help search engines and users navigate and understand the structure of a website. A site map typically includes the URLs of all the pages on the website, along with metadata such as the date the page was last updated, the importance of the page relative to other pages on the site, and any alternate language versions of the page.

This is the clearer definition of a sitemap. A newly built website needs to insert this sitemap on the xml url address. This can also be checked using the Google console website to access the sitemaps.
