CPanel is the most popular and maybe the best software used by hosting providers to let you manage your site in a shared hosting environment. If you install something like CPanel in a VPS or dedicated server, you would have almost all you need to sell hosting, or you can use it to have a simpler interface to run your server.

What free alternatives there are available? Do you recommend one?

Kloxo was the best free alternative to Cpanel that I used 3 years back. If your server has high speed and more space, then install Kloxo or any other alternative to Cpanel or else don't install as it takes a lot of memory. Directly use the server by installing Linux and it would run freely with a lot of space in it.

I got 512mb of VPS and once installed Kloxo it took somewhere 350 to 400mb, but can't remember the exact thing what has happened.

Well right now I just prefer to get a VPS with a linux distro and install everything by myself. I do this because I'm also interested in the sysadmin side of things.

Yes: Virtualmin GPL.

Visit their page at: www. virtualmin.com/download.html

You will find the instructions there (Install your Operating System, Download the Virtualmin Install Script...)

Just be sure to download the GPL version at:

software.virtualmin.com/gpl/scripts/install.sh

And follow the required steps:

sudo /bin/sh install.sh

Virtual Servers are easy to create in Virtualmin. You have quotas, installable scripts (such as phpMyAdmin) and every virtual server owner has his own panel.
