I'd say go with the affiliate marketing route. You can start wiht the viglink or the skimlinks. The reason being often the clicks can generate more revenue. Though you'd not be able to get more revenue compared to adsense. But you can make some good money in due process. It just takes more time in that way. You have to work harder to make some money though. I find it a bit harder either way with or without adsense if there is no traffic.

I found one more network when I was working on site in 2012. It's project wonderful. It's a good network. But earning from it was not easy. As it requires specific monthly or weekly ad slot requirement. In past there was entrecaard which used to promote your site to one another. But that's something you'd have to try out. Entre card system is dead but you have project wonderful acrive even today. So few cents here and there ppossible to earn.
