For those of you who haven't heard, the EU copyright directive, which includes Article 13 and Article 11, was adopted by the EU parliment earlier today with 348 members of the parliament in favor, 274 against, and 36 abstentions. It's a dark day for internet freedom, but in this early stage, it's still impossible to say how the outcome is going to be.

I, therefore, want to ask the members of BMF what you think is going to change as a result of this and what you think about the new directive? I find it hard to believe that EU will be able to censor to the internet, but a lot of websites, especially the bigger ones like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc., will surely have to undergo big changes. Also, @Mr. B do you think this community is going to be affected? And if so, how?

I know I'm not supposed to post links to other websites, but if you have no clue what I'm talking about, I'd really recommend you to check out a video about this by Computer Forever (link).

Article 13 just got approved in the EU parliament, and this is not good news for the internet.
Lots of content, such as parodies and more, will be snatched away from us by Robocopyright, chipping away at the internet's way of life. It will become harder for small content creators to share content and make money because the big companies will have greater control over what we share.
But that's just my thoughts. What are your thoughts?

Lol, I literally just wrote about this a minute ago.

I heard somewhere (unconfirmed source) that they may do an exception for parodies/comedic content, but I'm not sure if that's still a thing. I doubt that EU will be able to censor the whole internet, but this is surely is a terrible thing, especially for small creators and startups.

Seems anyone that make money off memes such as Pewdiepie is affected. As well people use copyrighted content and upload them to social media.

We are not affected because we don't share copyrighted content on the forum. And if EU don't like our forum no problem, members are smart enough to use VPN to access our site and the good thing, I just checked, we have small traffic from EU anyways, even if we get blocked by some reason by ISP from EU, we will be doing very well.

Let's get back to work and make more cash. See you around!

What use is an exception if it doesn't work? Robocopyright will just be searching for the copyrighted content, it doesn't understand humour or context.

I think this is where decentralisation might win out. There's a particular project I follow called LBRY that is aiming to be a decentralised and un-censorable YouTube-like platform. It could be that Article 13/17 just moves everyone from the traditional media to the decentralised media.

Or, nothing might happen. The EU's ill-thought-out cookie law was slowly watered down until it basically didn't matter. We don't really know until it happens.

All I can say is that at least there's now one positive for Brexit ;)

And how is "robocopyright" supposed to distinguish between copyrighted and non-copyrighted material? Music is one thing, but detecting it in images is much harder.

And yes, even though decentralized applications are interesting it doesn't mean you're allowed to use them to do illegal stuff.
