What are the origins of the name "Beer Money?" I Googled it to no avail and I'm really curious. Also, does anyone actually buy beer with the money they get from these sites?

I think it just goes back to beer being relatively cheap. Oftentimes people set aside money for beer every week. And if they couldn't afford it, it just makes it easy to ask friends for "beermoney" instead of the slightly more complicated, "can I have a few bucks for some beer?"

I'm making most of this up, but you know. Seems reasonable.

I guess it just comes from the fact that beer or a night out drinking is not one of those "essential" things. It's one of those things you may avoid doing if money is tight. Ideally, you would like to draw "beer money" from a secondary source as opposed to your main budget.

Yeah, it's just an adult version of 'pocket money' really, but making the assumption that adults spend their spare money on beer!

I have spent my beer money on beer. Had a night out coming up and not enough in the bank, so raided my beer money PayPal for it. That's what it's there for I guess...!

It means like pocket money. Small change that you can buy beer with, I guess. Nothing else makes sense at this point. It is not going to be Ferrari Money. I actually buy everything from this money since it is my only source of money. I bought beer few days ago and I remember this forum popped up in my head actually :)

I don't know where the term came from. I haven't seen any other sites with the name. I do know that reddit has a forum called "beer money" though. However, I've never bought beer, or any other type of alcohol for that matter, with money I've earned from online sites. I use the money to pay my bills and buy food, lol.

I'm new to it so I always thought it was because people wanted some extra bucks to get beer. Personally I won't buy beer because I simply don't like :p (if it's wine though, then I'm up to it!)

Yeah since these sites are my only source of income at the moment, I pretty much buy everything with the money I get from them. I have bought beer in the past with it as well, and probably will in the future, but that's just because I like beer. As for my theory on the forum's name, It's probably just because it's easy to remember and mildly humorous.

Well, beer is expensive, and a lot of people (myself included) don't want their annual beer budget to come out of their salary so making money on the side for a six pack isn't so bad! In my case however I'm trying to make some extra money so I can move to a nicer place, less so for beer.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Although I do think the name Beer Money is a bit more catchy than Wine Money would be.

Evening, even if I have never googled it actually I have come up with some ideas that might be really influential on that name. What I think is that that name was given because the beer reflects petty cash most of the time aslong as it is just for you and the money explains itself beer-money. You can get a couple of bucks every once in a while to buy a beer or something on the same boat of price however that doesn't mean you can earn more "important" cash because it says beer money; or the other way around. That's just my opinion though.

I think people are maybe looking a bit too deep into things to be honest! All it refers to is just like others have said, pocket money but for adults.

Extra money on the side for you to spend on what you want. You don't have to buy beer with it obviously, but I do sometimes...ok a lot of times in fact, but that's not the point, haha!

I mean, I don't drink, but I can see where the term came from and it's really not that complicated. People just like to have spare change with which they can buy things for enjoyment, which, in some cases, would be beer. The small amounts of cash you earn can add up to buy a beer or two (or something else, again, personal preference) once in a while. That's all there is to it.

I still haven't (currently trying to stay far from alcohol), but I might definitely enjoy having a beer with some extra money I earned in my spare time.
Thinking about it, though, I wonder why those who got things started (it would be interesting to figure out who it was, though) decided to go with "beer", and not, to say, "pizza money" or "chocolate money". I don't know about you, but it would sound more appealing to me.

I am assuming it's referring to the fact that beer is something people buy that is fairly cheap but is not considered a necessity or a bill. Most people don't make an excessive amount on these sites (with the exception of a few, I'm seeing!) so the money earned can be seen as "extra cash" used for something extraneous like beer. :)

I agree ahah ;) Wine Money makes it seem more classy than it actually is, while the Beer makes it look like we're a bunch of friends going out for a drink :p

I always thought the name came from the "beermoney" subreddit I was not aware of the fact that this was an English idiom that actually predated the concept of making money online. You can find some urban dictionary entries for the term that are older than reddit itself.

Beer money is simply an euphemism for discretionary income since beer is not a necessary thing and you should be spending only your extra income on that, yet "beer money" is a perfect name for this whole making money online thing since it tells you right from the beginning that you can only expect to make money for a few beers and not necessarily make a living out of this, I mean, it is possible, but some people have some very bizarre and insane expectations with this.

I think the name comes from the fact that you can't make a lot of money online, so they associated the money earned with something cheap, affordable: a beer, because juice wasn't manly enough. I personally never even took money out of my Paypal, so not talking about spending them on beer.

I personally don't drink beer and while you can't make much money from Beermoney websites, you can make thousands if not millions online. Things like blogging, affiliate marketing, YouTube, e.t.c can make you a very wealthy person and I know many people who do make a full time income by working online. I just used Beermoney websites as a start and now they are just that quick way of paying a portion of the bills or getting a free meal.

i hope meanwhile you managed to earn enough and cashout from your PayPal to your credit card and bought that beer :p
