Does anyone think the scratch games are worth it? Is there really a strategy to win? How about Powerball? Is there a strategy to Powerball or is the hype a scam? Finally, do you consider the lottery a mechanism that exploits the poor and feeds gambling addictions?

Lottery in our place is legalized. It is a government sponsored form of gambling. Most of the people who belong to the poverty level of the society are betting. A handful of middle-income group of people are trying their luck.

If gambling could ruin the lives of anybody, why is it legalized in our country? This is my big question.

I'm thinking that some believe that's the cost of human freedom. Note, these same people might also point fingers at the poor and claim they could be rich - if only they didn't drink, do drugs, and gamble. :) However, some left-wing types might be harshly critical of such remarks - seeing a bad motive.

Gambling is all about probability or chance. Since probability is maths and that is part of science I guess it is accepted in certain areas.

However, it depends on your interest. Not everyone will see it as a bad habit. My uncle used to have an awesome luck with gambling. If he plyed 5 times he would win atleast thrice and all big amount.

So practically he was always in gain.

Gambling on sports is different from doing the lottery and gambling in casinos though in my opinion. At least with sports betting we can have an educated guess at what might happen and be able to cut down the probability. We know that a horse runs well under a certain jockey, or on a certain track. We know what QB play's well against a certain defence, things like that but playing the lottery and casinos games is just a matter of luck.

Many people have tried to come up with a guaranteed way to beat the bank and all have failed to a certain extent. Gamble for fun and as a way to maybe win a bit of money, but winning money is certainly not the same as earning it, so I'm not sure I'd class it as a actual 'beer money' activity.

Actually, there is a strategy for poker machines. Nonetheless, you have to have a large bankroll going in. It's sort of the same deal when you have a business startup.

Betting against the favored option, though, must not usually be as profitable.

I believe the Lottery is a game of chance, and for me it's not worth it. You have less than 1% of winning in every draw and if you save all the money you used in buying those tickets, I bet you've already save a lot (for those people who buy lottery tickets every single day for years).

For those who feel it's a waste, the government might argue that the funds are used for education. Is that a good excuse? Should the government use lottery funds for education?

The lottery was invented to satiate the people's hunger for gambling. Unlike card games and other gambling games in the casino, lottery does not involve huge bettings so it's just like entertainment and giving hope to the people for the promise of the jackpot. I buy lotto tickets once in a while but only if I have spare money. As what the blurb of the lotto says, you help charity when you buy a ticket. The lotto in the Philippines is operated by the government and earnings are allocated for charitable causes, be it a lotto ticket or scratch card.

This is a general discussion, I don't think this discussion belongs to this category. Admin please transfer this.

Back to the topic, I gave up on the lottery because I realized that I spent a hundred thousand bucks on it on the last 10 years.

Playing poker with other people then I do think that strategy comes into it, but playing against a machine...I'm not too sure to be honest. People used to say that there was a system to beat the fruit machines as well but I know from experience that there isn't. There might seem like there is but having worked for a company a few years ago that installed and managed gaming machines, there really isn't any secret system and it is down to pure luck if you win or not.

Pressing certain combinations or waiting for certain scenarios to come up won't win you any more over the course of 12 months than if you just hit any nudge, pass or play button and any system that people think they have found is just coincidence.

As for the betting against the favourite when it comes to sport, people will find that betting AGAINST the favourite is profitable, more than betting on favourites. You win't win as often but when you do win it will be a lot more than what you would by backing the favourite. In sports betting you are looking for profit, not the amount of winners you can get. Get 5 winners all at favourite prices or 2 winners at longer odds and you will find the 2 winners will have made you more money than the 5 in the long term.

If that can be proven it's only luck, then I can win a lot of money in a lawsuit against a publishing company whose book said there was.

You only win by luck and you take a risk if you have money. Here in the Philippines, there are lots of gambling ways that government allows because they are getting something from it. I bet in Lotto but I am not addicted in betting. I only bet when I found out that there are people, the regular ones, that wins it or if I really need money. It is hard to win because some are saying the numbers are manipulative.

My friend once won the lottery and she is indeed very lucky. She has been able to do so much achievements with the money are received. When it comes to scratch cards there are some people who won over here. As for me I am always unlucky.

I only do scratch off tickets it save when you win I have won $50.00 and then I turned around then played $10 back to get the same tickets1

Definitely, they are not worth playing and investing money. I know many of them that tried and lost everything. Those sites are really worst.

what country you live?

"For you to earn some money, someone else has to lose it". Gambling, whatever the form has, is a way to make money. Mathematically, if you are not the house, you are going to lose if you play against the house. If you oppose other human opponents, then your chances are equal.
My favourite game is soccer betting. Practically, I am opposing the house(I take a guess on the result and the bookmaker bets on the opposite result), from a different point of view I am taking other people's money who are addicted or think they are the chosen ones who will become millionaires after a Saturday afternoon...
As long as you do not "brutally" wager and you enjoy the mathematical part in order to win, then I suppose gambling can be fun or a source of income.

I don't think its a question of worth but more of "why". Everyone after all has there reasons and one of the most popular reason would have to be because one wants to have the chance to win it. It's not a sure thing ofcourse because you only win by luck or fate unless you have a loophole to that. Another reason is for the thrill that one gets when they enter and have this idealism that they have the chance to get the prize.

When anyone sets their foot in the gambling den they should go there thinking that they will lose. It is the thrill that they pay for and winning is a bonus. That is my thinking.

This is true for some.
