I have around 800 sq. mtrs. of agricultural land which I had bought some 10 years back at dirt cheap price. The price of the land has not increased much since it is an agricultural land. So I am thinking of cultivating medicinal plants, and if possible export them. Some friends have suggested that I take up cultivation of Stevia, which is used to manufacture natural sweetener, which can replace sugar for diabetics. Other one they have suggested is aloe vera, which has lot of demand in cosmetic industry. Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

My suggestion is Ashitaba -It is not only a medicinal plant. It is also use in culinary purposes. It is a fast growing plant, When you harvest its leaves today, expect there will be new leaves that is visibly growing tomorrow. When I was still in high school, it was one of my business idea.

Ashitaba should grows well in fertile soil and good sun exposure. Don't forget to waters the plants regulary but don't overdo it.

Thank you very much for your suggestion and advice, it seems to be a very good proposition. Now I will have to find out how I can source the seeds. I will have to buy them online, because I don't think anyone here in India would be knowing about it. Even I heard the name for first time. Thanks once again!

Aloe Vera is a very good option because of high demand in not just cosmetics but pharmaceuticals too. Another plants could be Moringa. Although they grow to the size of shrubs. This plants is also very good. It can be processed into powder and stored.

Yes, I agree that moringa is also another good option. But are you sure it grows to the size of a shrub? I thought it a tree. Nevertheless, it offers many health benefits since it is loaded with vitamins and anti-oxidants.

Yes it can grow to size of a shrub and mostly trees. I'm not sure if it is going economical since you can plant other crops that do not compete with it for nutrients. It is definitely a good option.

Yes, whether it will be economically viable or not, that will have to be considered and evaluated. But I know for sure that this tree does not require much maintenance and the climate here in India where I stay is also very conducive to it. Besides, Himalaya, a well known manufacturer of Ayurvedic and herbal products, sells its extract in tablet form - it is called as Shigru in Sanskrit, the original Indian language.

These are wonderful suggestions here but you need to consider where you will be exporting the plants to before you can decide what to plant, on a general note aloe Vera or moringa plantation will do a lot and fetch you money because these plants has lots benefits beyond medical.

Yes, these plants such as stevia, aloe vera, moringa, ashitaba certainly have lot of demand in pharmaceutical industry; aloe vera also has good demand in cosmetic industry. I will first have to try to explore local market, and then I can think of exporting. But first and foremost, I will have to take up a feasibilty study, for which i will have to hire an expert.

There are many companies both online and offline that need to contract farmers for supply both locally and even internationally. With the right contact and quality products, it will be easier to manage.

Right information and contact matters most in the business of importation and exportation, I have seen people exporting the local rice here successfully and making good money from it.

Yes, you are right - you need to have a strong network and lots of contacts at the right places to be successful in business, of any kind. But Import-Export business is not a joke since you have to adhere to not only national, but international statutory regulations - for which one will surely require to consult an expert in the field.

Your points are indispensable, it is also very important to obey the rules and regulations because the risk involved in international business is high cos any violation will lead inpoundment regardless the amount involved

Yes that's also good business. Like it was said, a countries rules governing import and export needs to be considered so you need products that are friendly to both countries that you intend.

This will be a very good business idea for your land. Instead of letting it laid fallow. I think you can sell your medicinal plants both online and offline for wider coverage. Exporting might bring more money.

I think Chinese exporters are killing it on the medicinal plants export. There seems to be more such plants out there. And they are making some decent money. You may want to establish your brand on storage and the packaging of such herbs. And once things go on rolling fine. You can go ahead and make the most out of the medicinal plants export side. But first establish locally and then take things ahead.

I think you need to do few things
First, check if there is law prohibiting medicinal plants exportation in your country
Secondly, you need to contact firms that need those plants and reach agreement with them.
Finally draw a feasibility plans with emphasis to be more on source of capital.
