Obviously I will be a direct competitor to .com owner but I will add my twist and hope to build a successful site.

Should I buy .net or find another related .com domain for this niche. I will not divulge the niche, DO NOT ASK! Is top secret! If I tell I have to kill you! :D

You shouldn't buy it if you are new to blogging and don't know much about SEO. However if you are expert and can do anything with your site, you should surely buy the domain. After that optimize the site and rank it as a competitor towards the .com domain. But yo will have to put lots of efforts in this regard.

Thanks! After I analyzed better the competition at this niche I have decided to buy the .net domain and give it a try, btw I'm not a SEO expert just a regular webmaster.

Wish you the best of luck. I assume it wasn't Facebook.net because that's still available :)

Hopefully you are able to make it successful. If you do, maybe you will share your niche after all.

If your site against the com competitor, then my suggestion is to get .com domain as it gives more freedom value. If you bought and develop the net domain the worth will be less than com domain as it is the decision from the buyers.
Develop the com domain to have more powers and ability to sell for higher rate.

You should research if the dot com domain owner doesn't have a registered trademark or something. If he has a trademark, there is a chance he can sue you for the domain name, at least in my country it works this way.

Depending on what your site is about, it can also look like you're trying to be a fake version of the original domain, in that case it would be better to have a different name.

Domain name isn't that critical if you have a good content or business, most domain names aren't worth any more than what you spend when you register them.

the .net extension is nearly as solid as .com is along with .org. All other domain extensions tend to be a lot weaker then those are.

In regards to the marketing of a .net, note, you would have to emphasize the .net part. Otherwise, people will assume it's a .com. Anyway, I am not sure why certain people think .net is more professional than .info or something like .club. In fact, there are even those out there who think anything that isn't a .com isn't professional.

I am all out for a .com domain name whenever I want to own another website. If my preferred name is no longer available on the .com I would make efforts to tweak the name in a way to get the available form. At other times I may change the name entirely. I do this until I get a name under the .com extension.

So it is a choice between .com and .net? In the earlier years, the domain sites have meanings like .com is for commercial purposes and .org is for organizations while .net is obviously for network. But now I find sites that have lost meaning to the identification of the domains. I guess .com or .net is just the same. And with your secret site, what you need is to promote it relentlessly. Give yourself a month for this promotion campaign and see if it works or not. And if you don't get a good number of hits after a month of promoting your secret site then you already know what to do.

Well it depends on what your brand is. If it is similar to the .com site then don't go with it as most likely they will just request that you take your site down because it is too similar to theirs. A .com domain would be a lot better to be honest compared to a .net one but if you have no choice just go with it, try to work on SEO and get it further up the google search results. Can you not try and alter your domain name slightly so you can get a .com one?

Really it depends on what your aims are. If you think you stand a chance against the .com competitor without getting into legal issues you can buy it.

I think the shouldn't be a problem acquiring the .net extension since it still among the top domain extension. if you still needs the dot com and it taken, then try out other names and search out if it still available, I know people should like the dot com extension but if not go for the .net.it wouldn't make your blog less professional.
