I have been searching for a new niches, but google places Wikipedia sites right at the top of the key words I have been researching.
When I do the same search in yahoo, there other sites that are above the Wikipedia site.
Is it worth while doing the seo specifically for yahoo?

Google gives preference to non commercial sites, where as yahoo gives preference to commercial sites. You can almost never beat wikipedia on Googl search, however, you can rank #1 on yahoo with the same content. Therefore, you must alsooptimize for yahoo or Bing for that matter.

So it's still worth while doing the seo for yahoo. If you can outrank Wikipedia you probably will get more traffic then you would in google.

Everyone should try to "diversify" their traffic sources.

While yes if you are trying to get traffic from Google and Yahoo, there's not much diversification there but point is there's no guarantee you'll get the same amount of traffic from Google all the time. An algorithm update could rob you of most of your traffic overnight. This is why, even though it means working harder, you should try to optimize your site for Yahoo and Bing so in case you lose Google traffic, you'll still be getting some traffic from Yahoo and Bing.

Good advice that's the feeling I have been having. Even though the market is dominated by google doesn't mean you can supplement your site with some extra traffic. I would even go as far as saying that it would be worth while making a site especially dedicated to yahoo and bing. If your other site looses it's ranking at least you won't loose everything.

When it comes to rankings I have always found them to be a bit arbitrary, but they really are an indicator of something so they certainly have value. It all comes down to what kind of metrics they are using to rank their sites, whether it be clicks or what have you, and I would say that if you can find ways to infiltrate that process it is best to do so.

This is very true, but if anyone has been able to penetrate their metrics they won't be so quick it, or at least they wont share it for free. I have noticed that there is a lot of info about ranking in google but very little on yahoo or bing.

I think it's definitely worthwhile to do SEO specifically for Yahoo. After all, not all people search in Google. There is a plethora of search engines that people use, in fact here are the rankings:

1. Google
2. Bing
3. Yahoo
4. Ask
5. AOL
6. Wow
7. WebCrawler

So if you can optimise your content for the first five sites, it can truly be beneficial for your site. The good thing is, Yahoo and Bing are almost one company and optimising for one of them, it means you've also optimised for the other.

Good luck!

Just my two cents but then again there's no right method for SEO - as long as it works and you're not banking on too many black hat techniques, then you do not have to worry overmuch. However, I prefer to prioritize Google and once I feel like my ranking is secure in that department, I shift my focus on Bing and Yahoo (they have merged SEO-wise by the way). You have a lot of ranking competition at Google but Bing/Yahoo only requires lots of organic and real traffic plus adherence to their HTML rules.

Yahoo and Bing are easier to beat than Google. Nonetheless, all of them are more difficult than in the past. Note, it might even be possible to use exact match domain - to some extent, on Bing and Yahoo. However, though, I'd be on the lookout for spammers linking to your site from bad neighborhoods. Note, in the past, Google was tougher on this than Bing and Yahoo, but I am not so sure about the situation now.

The decision to target Bing and Yahoo depends on the keyphrases targeted. Yahoo and Bing have big searches on certain keyphrases, but obviously, Google has big searches on nearly all of them.

Something tells me that this really does not carry as much weight as it once did. I guess that is just how things do though, and maybe someday the popular ones now will fall.

Ive tried long back ranking in Yahoo and nothing helped to me. I read about results here, but did anyone tried for ranking?

algorithme of indexing is different between Google and Yahoo , how do you think google and yahoo class results ?

Yahoo search is now part of the Bing. And you can see that Bing search results are pretty much good quality. So they don't tend to require backlinks but other sites linking you is what they want to see. And they refine the search lot better and they also take a look at the branding part. So that's what you should do too.

Well, Google is still the king, no one could argue that. But there's still a substantial amount of surfers who use Bing (Yahoo search rebranding). And the competition is lower there, so it should be easier to rank.

Diversification is the right words so that you gain in another engine if another engine doesn't give you the right position that you need but just optimize your site and hope for the best.

Well, it's sad to see yahoo not being a thing still after 4 years of this topic, i believe it should be locked since yahoo isnt a thing anymore
