Prolific a great survey site.

Just a quick heads up about this site that I'm not sure you know about as I haven't seen it mentioned on the forum yet.

Prolific Academic Review.jpg

The site is a survey site but it's got a twist in that the surveys and questions you get asked, are from Universities around the world and your answers go towards helping students complete their studies.

It's a UK based site, but as far as I know, it's open to international subscribers, and for the last 6 months I've cashed out around £50 a month and I don't think that's too bad. Payment is to a verified PayPal account, and the minimum cash out is only £5.

You do get quite a few bonus payments from Prolific, but like nearly every other survey type site, you aren't going to be able to make a reliable income from them so I'm not sure what people want. In 12 months I've earned nearly £600 and while it may not seem a lot compared to a regular paid income, as a side income which all of these sites are meant to be, I don't think we can complain to much.
I agree! :p

For me Prolific ac gives surveys rarely. Initially they were all very low paying ones literaaly 20 or 30 cents. The last one that I received gane me £2. However, they are so rare that I may cash out in three months.

I guess location matters.

It also helps to do the pre-screen quals... Seems like at least once a week, i am updating mine... I average $40.00 a month from prolific and have so for the past year...

I have looked at this one again and again, and I think that it is a good one but I just have not really gone all in yet. It reminds me of MTurk, which I think was the point, and if it is half as good as that I would think it would be worth it.

Doing the screening questions does make a difference, and while it might mean that you don't get half as many surveys, the ones you do get then as long as you follow the rules you are guaranteed to make money. You won't get screened out half way through or near the end, as you have already answered the questions before you have started.

You also have to make sure that you pay attention as well though, as more and more of the surveys are including attention check questions, just to make sure that...well, your paying attention basically. I don't see that as a problem though, because if they are willing to pay you £5 for doing a 20 minute survey, the least you can do is read the questions properly and pay attention.

I have used this site for a while and cashed out a few times, not large amounts. I don't think it's a site you visit everyday and expect regular money. I pop by when I remember and pick up a little extra cash. The up side it that the surveys are often pretty interesting and the interface works well. the only survey I had a problem with was one I spent a lot of time on, but to complete you had to provide emails for two other people to participate. Because I was not willing to do that I could not finish and got no credit for that one at all. I think requirements like that should be disclosed clearly before you begin.

All the surveys that I have had from this site, the rules and requirements have always been clearly set out right at the beginning, it's just that a lot of the time people aren't willing to read them. Before you even accept the survey you qualify for, a terms and conditions page comes up and people just tick the box and away they go without reading it through.

There are a few surveys on there that ask you to link your Facebook or other social media accounts, and if you aren't willing to do that, then obviously don't start the survey in the first place otherwise you WILL be wasting your time. Maybe the survey you are talking about was one of the earlier ones, but I know for a fact that things have improved recently on the site when it comes to that side of things and making sure people know exactly what's expected.

Occasionally there's the kind of researchers that don't read Prolific's terms and conditions at all. There's sometimes studies that ask you to install dodgy stuff on your device, even though it's against the rules to ask that of the participant (we're supposed to report those). Providing personal identifiable data like names or emails is also against the terms and conditions, because no serious study needs data that can be traced back at you to yield a result.

A lot of these researchers are college or grad students doing their thesis on a topic, but not everyone is inclined to design good surveys making them biased or too incomprehensible or providing too little time (it's kind of a skill to ask the right questions), so that's why Prolific is like a bowl of mixed M&Ms when it comes to these studies.

I am noting down some successes and some pitfalls in that site according to the users' testimony. By the way, I am just reacting for I know my country is not within its coverage for I live in the Philippines. @pwarbi has shown a screenshot of his earnings in 2017. He did it almost 100% of the surveys. However for @GenevB since her registration got only an initial cash out of £30 and then she hasn't found any offer.

Well, surveys may be draining out. There are only limited or no more surveys for the time being.

There's usually more surveys at the end of spring and at the beginning of fall, because that's when college and master's students start their semester and therefore their thesis or studies.

Been using Prolific Academic on and off (more off than on) for about a year or so. I recently started using VisualPing to notify me when something's posted. It's made a significant difference. Reached minimum payout fairly quickly.

What is this VisualPing?

What is this VisualPing?

It's a free Chrome app. The user chooses the site page they want the app to monitor. When there's a change, the user is notified.

I'm guessing there are other equivalents for other browsers.

That's cool! Thanks!

Thanks for posting. I used to use this site a lot but the number of surveys seemed to dry up over time. In fairness I did make quite a few quid from it about a year ago, looking at my account now I can see £60, which was money for nothing really so I can't complain. I like the fact that the surveys generally are not so much marketing ones like with Mturk and the like, but more academic, from universities and such. They are far more interesting for that reason.

I've also made some nice money using prolific. Maybe I'm just lucky and have been getting surveys quite often.

But ye, like somebody above wrote there is an increase when students start their studies which is logical.

If you aren't making as much as you would like, try to use other pages aswell.. you shouldn't use just prolific anyway. It is not steady enough for most people.

Thanks for the Visualping tip btw, didn't know about it :)

I think the number of surveys fluctuate based on where various universities are in their academic year. Over the summer and winter I usually don't see as many surveys since the universities that normally host them aren't in full swing.

Nonetheless, I haven't come across another survey site that pays as well or as often as Prolific does.

That's true. It's also easier to spot a study when it has a large number of available spots, because smaller ones fill up in no time...Also most don't pick the longer studies, even if they pay well, and are more fun than the rest, and they also drop the harder ones. Lately these seem to be the only studies I can find, even with Visual Ping.

PA is probably my best earning site even though I can go days without a survey. I like it because the studies are different, sometimes quite challenging, and I rarely get disqualified. On one of the studies I did last week I got a £4 bonus.

Unfortunately many countries seem to be banned quite recently but I am one of the lucky ones who is still allowed to participate.
