Hi All,

This is my 2nd attempt to try to join Amazon Mechanical Turk and have been denied with no offered explanation.

This is the response I got back:

Greetings from Amazon Mechanical Turk,
We have completed our review of your Amazon Mechanical Turk Worker Account. We regret to inform you that you will not be permitted to work on Mechanical Turk.

Our account review criteria are proprietary and we cannot disclose the reason why an invitation to complete registration has been denied. If our criteria for invitation changes, you may be invited to complete registration in the future.

Thank you for your interest in Mechanical Turk.
Sincerely,
Amazon Mechanical Turk

Is it because they are no longer accepting workers outside of the US? I'm Canadian and do some work at Clickworker/UHRS and I am waiting for the next process to get approved for iSoftstone (they will be sending me testing & qualification info).

Has anyone else been denied at mTurk? Did they give you a reason why?

I believe that mTurk now only accepts workers within the US so since you are Canadian they won't accept you. It's strange that they wouldn't just come right out and say that though.

mTurk no longer accepts accounts from users from outside of the US as @beasleym1989 as already said, and I think it been that way for a while now.

The only reason they haven't said that's why your account as been denied, is probably simply because they won't know. I'm guessing they get many applications every day to work, so to get the reason for rejection on every account will take them too long so it's easier for them to just send a generic email refusing your request.

Thank you @beasleym1989 & @pwarbi for you replies! I figured that was that case but I don't know why they just don't come out and say so. I've looked at a few articles about this and some state that they don't accept international applicants and then I've seen Amazon reps say that it isn't the case. Oh well, there's still a few other opportunities I'm researching but it's a shame about Amazon because they seem to have a lot of HITS available in comparison to Clickworker/UHRS.

Yeah, almost certainly because you're international. I feel you're pain - I'm Canadian too, and I've wanted to try mTurk for ages. Hoping it'll start branching out again, but not optimistic.

I've seen workarounds for using mTurk as an international worker, essentially fooling Amazon into thinking you're in the US, but I imagine you'd be swiftly banned if they discovered the truth.

Are there other sites you would recommend that are open to Canadians? At the moment I'm only with Clickworker/UHRS & Postloop. I'm also waiting to get some testing/qualification info from iSoftstone. I registered at Freelancer & Upwork but it's way too competitive in terms of bidding. So many people bid for such low hourly rates that it doesn't seem worthwhile to try to compete against them.

I've also been turned down for mTurk and wasn't sure why as they didn't explain it when I've tried to sign up. I was under the impression they would allow people from other countries to join though, so that's probably been my problem too.

I believe MicroWorkers is open to Canada if that's any good to you. I use it from the UK and find some jobs on there can be worth doing (for example liking facebook pages for $0.55 or even more sometimes seems pretty good to me!). I'm not sure it's exactly what you're looking for though, but for clicking a couple of buttons, it might be worth checking out.

Hi @cocolgooh ,

I hadn't looked into MicroWorkers yet and wanted to thank you for the suggestion. I'm going to register today and see what they have available.

Thanks so much!:)

Amazon's mturk is probably the best known microtasks site. It doesn't have a referral scheme, so there's no affiliate link here.

For anyone who doesn't know, you sign in as a worker, select tasks like liking a page or doing a survey, and get a small payment in cents for them. You can qualify for larger and better paid tasks by doing tests that up your ranking.

Recently they did make one change to mturk, which is that they will accept workers from outside the US. The problem is that they still pay in amazon.com gift vouchers which are non-transferable, so if you don't have anything you want on .com or need to buy from another country's Amazon site, you're out of luck. For overseas workers posting fees can eat a lot of your income. There's one exception: Indian workers can be paid by direct deposit in rupees. There are full details on the mturk FAQs page, linked in their site footer.

I'm UK-based and have never had a problem working with them, but trying to find things to spend the giftcards on is a complete nuisance. I ended up sending gifts to several US friends, which is one way to get round it.

I think they updated it sometime last year. They haven't said if there are any countries they don't support, so I suspect you're fine anywhere as long you can can do the tasks you request. Their FAQ just classes it as US workers, Indian workers and Other International workers.

If you're not in the US, be aware that a lot of the tasks are limited to US-resident only, and not many of them pay that well. I made most of my funds on there doing transcription because it was the best paying thing I could get.

I was a big user of Mturk a little while ago and I have to say it was probably the best site that I have come across when it comes to making money online. I am not nearly as experienced as others are though so you have to factor that in. It was great, though, and most of what I did was academic surveys and they were pretty short and paid pretty well. It does take a little time devotion, but you can get the hand of things pretty quickly and see your earnings grow. Give it a shot if you are looking for something a little more reliable.

You said Indian workers? Not at all. We Indians are not allowed to work on that site. The FAQs of the site guides the Indian worker to convert the money into our currency but that is only for the Indian people who registered before 2012. Before 2012, they were accepting the worker from any country. I also tried to register on the site few week ago and they emailed me :

I tried Mturk but my application was rejected for whatever reason. Most of these micro job sites favor American citizens. Still, since Mturk is run by Amazon so I guess it's a pretty good way to earn money for those that are eligible to work on it.

I have registered for Mturk last year. I think I remember seeing some tasks still available for me then. I didn't log into my account for a long time though. And just last week, I tried logging into my account and it won't allow me to do any tasks anymore. I can still see them but I cannot work on any of them. I don't know though how long this change in their terms and conditions were implemented. It's such a shame because I'm in dire need of another job nowadays.

So far, I haven't read too much negative reviews about the site. Although the pay is relatively low, no one had complained about not being paid for jobs. And some even claim to earn at least five dollars a day for doing some micro tasks. I also remember seeing that this site offers transcription jobs as well. And I even saw one of the transcription sites that I used to work for in there, you can actually access the jobs from there.

I just wish that they would open up for other countries. That five dollars is already a lot in our currency. But yeah, sadly, not a lot of sites work for my country and I have come to accept that fact.

I have up on MTurk after making only about $2 after several weeks of working some almost every day. The only jobs I could understand payed no more than 5 cents a piece, so my fastest earning was about 30cents an hour!!! Partly because I do not have a fast internet connection. Many tasks were unclear and so I failed to be able to do them correctly. I always thought I was reasonably smart, but I failed to pass the test to be able to transcribe receipts!!! 3 times I tried! I think there is really something wrong when someone who graduated HS with a 4.0 and college with highest honors can't pass a test like that.

I admire and am jealous of those who are able to successfully do MTurk jobs. I am sure you are able to earn much more in your daily online work than I am with the things I have been able to do successfully. I wish I could find some good tasks on there that suit my brain and internet speed, but that doesn't look like a possibility right now.

Lot of the tasks on MTurk are focused on the US based users. The reason being local surveys are only to be filled by the localities. And that means you can see that it's natural for the job givers to the next level. I think it's reasonable. I don't think there is anything wrong on those buyers part. It is acceptable because lot of local things we don't know internationally. So we have to consider that part for sure.

I am from India. I faced the same situation as others. They accept only US based users. It was not clarified why users from other countries were not permitted to work. Reason for denying our registration is not acceptable.

I feel they should give opportunities to all the countries instead of focussing only US based users. :Cautious:
