Does anyone here rely on Let's Encrypt for SSL for their website, blog or forum? I was slightly confused at first when I found out about it but it's now my lifesaver especially since Google is now punishing sites that do not use HTTPS. It's great to have a free solution for those of us that can't afford to pay the high prices for a premium SSL certificate. And it's so simple to set up as well, my host automatically sets it up for all packages so I didn't have to do anything. Are you guys using Let's Encrypt?

Yes, I do actually. Their service is great and I think it unnecessary to pay a lot of money for something when there're great options available for free.

However, Let's Encrypt do actually differ a bit from commercial certificate authorities. For example, Let's Encrypt does only validate the ownership of the domain and not the one requesting the certificate (the latter is called organization validation and is offered by most commercial CA's). Because of this, malware sites have used Let's Encrypt to look more official which of course affect Let's Encrypt's reputation negatively.

Now, simply having "https" will make many users trust your website on the same level as websites with organization validation even though it's a pretty big difference between the two. The same applies to Google that, I think, don't treat websites different based on their type of validation.

Personally, I think it's OK that small businesses use a free CA, but websites operated by, for example, big corporations, banks, or e-commerce should probably consider going with a commercial option.

EDIT: I think Let's Encrypt's certificates have an expiration of 90 days which some people may find annoying, but it's free so you shouldn't complain. xD

We have it installed as well on our server and is doing a very good job. However, we are considering buying an SSL from NameCheap next year.

After 90 days it renews alone.

Are you sure? I can understand that it may renew automatically if you've installed it via a cpanel, but if you install it manually you'll probably have to set up a cronjob to make it work.
When I had a Python based website, with that host I had to manually update it every 90 days or before to ensure it continued. If I stopped then the SSL certificate would have expired. But with my current host, I don't have to do anything at all and it automatically renews I presume in the backend.

Yeah, that's often the case if you install the certificate via a control panel. However, as I said earlier if you don't have access to a control panel you can simply configure a cronjob to regenerate the certificate every 80 days or so.

Let's encrypt is funded and sponsored by many networking companies that includes CISCO. So for bloggers, and the small shops it is definitely worth using. if you are bank or higher security specific company. Then you need higher encryption. I think on that note it's necessary to go for something better than let's encrypt.

A small updated, we upgraded to a paid SSL from RapidSSL, cost only $35 per year, we did this because the free SSL from Let's Encrypt was making Google Chrome throwing "not safe" warning to some of our visitors which is not COOL!

Considering forum grows this was a smart move, RapidSSL also offers $10,000 warranty. Let me know if you guys have any questions regarding this.

In short, the SSL was issued after payment and installed on our server by our web hosting customer service for free.

That sounds weird that Let's encrypt throwing the errors on chrome. I am guessing this could be because of the cpanel not installing lets encrypt properly on wildcard side I guess. In case of RapidSSL, I guess it being a paid SSL and also it has higher encryption support, it is supposed to work. But glad to hear that paid SSL have managed to clear that chrome warning issues. I may have to check with chrome forums on what is causing Lets encrypt to throw errors.

Do we have to use Let's encrypt or SSL if we don't have any login/registration form on website? I don't think we have to since our visitors only visit pages.

These days cpanel offers Lets encrypt. And you have option to either use it or not. I think many people prefer the SSL because google chrome issues warning if not. You can also consider using it because you don't want browsers to stop users from visiting your site because of you not using the SSL. So I suggest making use of the SSL on your blog or the HTML pages.

As our knowledgeable members said it is true that namecheap offers ssl at the best prices in the market especially at their yearly sales where you can get domains , ssls , hosting at huge discounts , their support is better than their competitors too , and they do help when you actually need them
