Hi guys and bloggers especially,

Can you guys please let me know if SSL certificate is necessary to rank well on Google?

I mean yes, Google does emphasize on them but does it also penalize if any blog does not have this certificate installed on their blog?

Thank you.

I did not obtain SSL certificate for my website when I launch it. and I can boldly tell you that I still receive traffic from Google search engine without SSL certificate. you can only be concerned about traffic if you are not engaging in search engine optimisation for your website. Search engine is all about targeting easy to rank key words on your website so that it will rank on the first page of Google to receive free organic traffic.

Thanks, but how can one be sure when you haven't used SSL and then see the difference between a no SSL and a website with SSL certificate?

I mean, doesn't Chrome or Google gives a warning that this site may not be secured before logging on to the website with no SSL certificate?

I dont think it is needed to can grow in google rankings, but there is one problem. If you havent SSL certificate, your website wont be available for any old model smartphones and some new too. Some smartphones don't open sites without SSL,because there is high chance of viruses and scams,so for better optimization use any SSL Certificate, you can get it for free from some websites.

SSL is the least you can do to increase your website's security. Most modern browsers are now automatically blocking websites that have no SSL. So, even if you're able to rank well on Google, your visitors will be repulsed back, and no longer visit your website.

I agree here with the other members, SSL is a security mechanism that encrypts data sent from the server to the visitor and vice versa. I do recommend this for all websites that have forms and use credit card information.

To answer your question, according to Digicert (an SSL certificate issuer), Google gives a ranking boost to sites using an SSL certificate. How much this boost weights for actual ranking is unknown.

You guys are right its important to have your SSL otherwise the latest version of google blocks a webpage to opening for you and it allows you as the website owner to have a cut in your traffic that will ultimately make your rank lower in search engine rankings

Now time is changing, do does many such things, in India most of the Govt run sites don't have SSL certificate, we even receive warning page if we try to go there, but then I doubt hoe govt website is harmful. (Yet it can be fir other reasons too), but when govt don't use it, any very important site might also ignore it.

Backlink is the major rank signal when it comes to search engine optimisation for a website. Before you start building backlinks, it is very important to get the on-page optimisation correctly. Part of it is to write quality content on your website target competitive keywords in your niche. You need to ensure that the loading speed of your website is not slow. Using brandable domain name is part of search engine optimisation but most people don't usually take note of it. Publishing unique content regularly on your website can also bring a progress to the traffic on your website.

An SSL certificate is not a determinant of one's ranking on Google. An SSL certificate is not even necessary to rank well in google. What determines one's ranking on Google is that amount of traffic on one's website, the addiction of backlinks to one's website, the speed of one's websites and many other factors but definitely not SSL certificate.

Do you even know what is SSL certificate?
Without it no website will last long, people will stop visiting the website, and this will harm its reputation. If site is reported, then Google might block it for not being a safe website. Govt websites will survive without it, not ordinary websites.

SSL certificate is needed for payment, banking, internet shops apps I think. Not for search engines.
If your website stores visitors' information, you must need an SSL certificate for its credibility. As far as search engines like Google are concerned, they do not promote any site without SSL certificate, even if that site does not contain any information.

No. Google will not penalize your website for not having SSL but it will make it harder for you to rank especially if you are targeting an important keyword that is related to money or medicine. But if it's jut a blog then you are good.

Google search are not accepting free blogs and domains too, not even blogspot unless people directly search them.
There are some lesser known platforms which are providing full SSL certificates for free, but I suspect this, how they will earn if they offer free? There might be some hidden benefit
