As long as the site can be trusted, you're safe to do so linking your social media account.

As a matter of fact, this method is the current hack to jailbreak iPhones that didn't yet update their software without any user's interaction.

I think somehow the site gets to know the user Facebook password and can access it without the users knowledge or even hack the users account .
I suspected this when I signed to a website recently using my email account.

It's because of some loopholes either in your gadget you're using, app/website you're visiting, or one of the 3rd party that the app/website is using in there business operation that the other individual/s is/are exploiting either for monetary gains/for a good cause to warn the parties involved. Whatever the reason is, your photos, GPS location, Whatsapp and Telegram conversation will be stored on the perpetrator server every 60 seconds every time you're using the app/website.

i don't think it is safe to login via facebook infact any social media account. i have 2 emails, one i my official which i use only when required and the second for if i am not sure about the website.

That is a very good tip. Use a separate social media or email address account when signing doubtful application/website. In this way, you can take the risk.

I'd advise you to create a separate Facebook account for these purposes other than your original main account.
Personally I always use the second account whenever I have to log in to such sites
