I heard that if the server is close to your location its server speed would be really good. It comes down as it moves away from your location. I wonder how it actually works and is it advisable to go for a cheap overseas host.

I guess it also depends on your target audience. If they are supposed to be from your location I think it would be wise to go for a local web hosting company. However, I am not sure how to go about it. Any thoughts on this?

Google, Bing, and Yahoo might look at the web-hosting source if you haven't specifically targeted a nation. Note, in the webmaster tools for Bing/Yahoo and Google there is a way to target. Note, however, though, if you choose certain national extensions like .us, then it's assumed you're targeting a certain nation, no matter what.

I just recently thought about this as I am thinking of switching the hosting company. Though the connection speed might not affect much, since mine are simple websites and applications, I think it might be easier to get support with phone calls if the hosting company is located in the same company. Though I usually look for support online, I think if it's really urgent case, talking in phone is still faster.

No specific benefit. I suggest go with features that you get in US for low price. In US the prices are slashing every single day. And many companies are giving literally hosting on peanut prices even with our local country price. So I'd say get the hosting on the US based host such as hawkhost etc. That should be cheap and less hassles.

Seems like most people don't know but it's very very important to choose the location of your web hosting datacenter.

You should consider the following when choosing a webhosting:
+ where is most of your traffic located (country, closer the datacenter means faster loading speed)
+ how much resources do you really need (bandwidth and storage, why pay for resources you don't need)
+ do they offer backup (having backup is a must)
+ how good are customer support and security (search honest webhosting reviews online)
+ how much it cost and extra features you get

Hope this helps!
