In freelancing such as Upwork or Freelancer.com, there are jobs which we call at an hourly rate and fixed rate. I do believe both has advantages and disadvantages. However, I want to know which will work better. I am skeptical to accept some jobs by hourly rate because I am busy.
Which do you guys prefer? Hourly rate or fixed rate?

I think hourly rate or rate as per word is better and best for the writers and it will make them work harder. Though all payment methods have their pros and cons and there could be no perfect method.

I took a writing job before which rate as per word. It is good. But how about other jobs such as internet research? Which actually works better?

As a writer, I prefer to earn based on word rates. Most of the time, the terms of the deal are concluded with word rate as the basis of payment. This is fine with clients once they have used you before since they know the quality which you are providing them with.

There are many things like that but sadly i was never part of it. My offline job does not allow me to take much part in all that and that's the reason why i am lagging behind

I think I would advise to choose fixed rate cause you might be busy sometimes and you might be less busy sometimes also.

For writers, rate per word is better than fixed rate. I had experienced one before, and compared to fixed rate, which is tedious for me

In fact, I prefer fixed rate than hourly rate in other jobs such as data entry and internet research. But with writing articles, I prefer per word rate.

I have to agree. I experienced working for fixed rate. I felt that it is not a fair reflection of the time spent. It varies due to customer expectations and the topic required.

I think combination of the two would be the way to go. I have found out that freelancing can be hard with low cost fixed rate. And in this case you have to push yourself with the monthly fee in some case.

So the best option in this case is find the clients who can pay hourly and monthly rate. And also find the short term clients who can pay for fixed cost projects. That seems to be the way it works out properly. Avoid low cost fixed jobs as it eats more of your time these days.

Yes, I think that we need to be judge well before agreeing to a transaction with our clients. Never make unrealistic targets or overestimate our own ability. It gets better with experience when handling such issues.

When I am still new with freelancing, I actually chosen the low paying ones considering myself just looking for clients. But it is not really worth it. I agree with you that in the long run, we should be choosing the higher rate with fixed rates.

Experience holds the key in that. If we don't have any such experience than there are more chances of our failure. If we have some experience than we can strike good deals and set realistic targets for us.

I think it is much more convenient to accept fixed rate:500 words/$5 or 1000 words/$10.
It is much better than work for hourly rate. But it depends on the person's free time and preference.

Fixed rate I think it is better. Because it could take more or less. With fixed rate you know that you have already fixed the price and not have to worry on how much hours you work for the project

You are perfectly right. It is better that way, it will save you more time to work on any other things that you have to do on a daily basis.

As a freelancer, I prefer hourly payment in long term jobs. As an employer, I prefer fixed term contracts as I had some unfortunate events of discrepancy in the past. Upwork(as oDesk in the past) could not count quality per hour, just work per hour. So now, with a fixed term contract, I can evaluate the job done before paying.

That's a good suggestion. If you are a part-timer, that works better.

Exactly! Some jobs can be doable in less than an hour with focus. That way, you can have a free time.

Thanks for the suggestion. You're all appreciated.

I will check online and see what's the average rate charge by peers.
I found that the European countries users love to charge per hourly rate while Asean coutries users will charge fixed rate.
There are good and bad sides for both charge basic, so I am okay with both as long as it's reasonable and fair.

It is sort of a cycle. You have to get out of that low paying cycle from client. If you don't then you'd end up being their puppets on low pay. For example people on fiverr never able to ask for 50$ project. Because most of the buyers there are broke as is. So that cna be bad for your future. You have to take future in your hands in this process and develop better portfolio. Low cost projects never work out.

Yeah. As I said, that was when I am a newbie in freelancing. In fact, I declined lots of invites which pays a low rate. Also, I shun away from those data entry jobs which ends up captcha typing. I hope those jobs would be eliminated.
