Should I buy SSL for my ecommerce website?
Is it true this is an important ranking signal?

I don't think buying SSL will rank your site in top, It is just considered as secured site. I too own a E-commerce, but still not yet developed and it remain as http in url structure.
Every E-commerce site comes with Https so you too go like that, if you have small cart, then get develop it before buying SSL.

You absolutely must purchase SSL if your goal is to take money on your website. Users do not want their personal/credit card information transfered around unencrypted. There are some users who don't even want to create an account on an insecure site.

It is also worth noting that referral information does not transfer from https to http. This means that if someone blogs about your website and their website is https, that referral information doesn't show up in your logs if your website is only using http.

Search engines probably don't care either way, but you and your users probably do.

Yes. This. Absolutely this. Google won't care a fig if you have that S in your HTTP, but anyone who knows anything about online security will probably look for the https first thing when determining whether or not they'll do business with your site. I doubt I would bother with a site lacking even that form of encryption.

In case of the e-commerce market, you can see that https is definitely required. You can see that http is not much required. and the thing is thaat https. And that being said, it would be something we have to consider there as well. so go with the https.

I will write for the sake of your users or buyers you will need and https more because this shows that the site is secured and it will boost buyers confidence to transact business on your site,I think it very important to an e-commerce site .People no longer joke with their means of payment online not with all the scammers and fraudsters lurking around everywhere. I don't think Google cares much about that.

In case of the e-commerce sites it is necessary to also buy the higher SSL certificates which are paid. This way you can make sure that the clients data is protected on and off the forms on the site. You can see that cloudflare offers such services. And also there are some of the private SSL sellers who offers similar that services.

Just as stated by other comment, if you really need people to do business with / in your site, then you should go for HTTPS because people feel secure with that. Cyber scam is much now so people are more careful now.

Not only will SSL help your ranking, it also helps with trust and will boost conversions for your website. It is a must these days and most hosts will offer a basic certificate for free. This is perfect for most sites.

SSL is really important regardless of the kind of website you are trying to build, you might find it difficult to rank without it cause on Google's now considering it and marking non https website as insecure since last year.
BTW SSL are pretty cheap to get (if not free), i don't see a reason why you shouldn't use it.

https for sure , people are caring too much nowadays about safety , so yeah , also using http will show that your website isn't securised to the users .

Https was and always will the best way to show the authenticity of website. Along with that it has some part in playing with seo rankings too. So, you should prefer https.

So, https is free anyways why not? There's let's encrypt and cloudflare.

Afaik it also somehelps with your ranking in SEO if your site is https

Plus google chrome showing "not secure" in http only sites. Think about it If I was a regular joe wouldnt want to transact with something labeled "not secure"

It does not improve ranking much, does not have a large impact on that
But from my point of view, https websites look a lot more secure

To run an e-commerce website, you will need buy SSL certificate for your website. One of the thing that is used to know is an e-commerce website is legit is domain extension service it uses. If a website is having https, then it is secure. If your website doesn't have that, people will see it as scam

We you started developing your Ecommerce, you first of all live it in http and after doing the finish touches you can then purchase the SSL which will make the site secured.
