Well I have just posted a reply on a thread where user is asking where to start web designing. So that thread encouraged me to post this thread.

Moving on..

What is web design?

In simple web design is a process of converting a simple textual webpage into fully interactive website with a determined colors, text styles, images, graphics and etc. It deliver all the features that user needs to interact with a webpage.

Web design process.

#Planning
#Wire frames
#Wire frames to PSD or AI or your favorite tool
#PSD to html to css
#Adding more functions and interactions (using Jquery and other advanced techniques).

Where to begin?

There are thousands of things to learn in designing part but I'm listing of the things below.

Illustrator
Photoshop
HTML
CSS
Flash
Javascript/jQuery

Well I have shared few things to learn about web design, but you people share your tips to learn web designing. (it would add more value to this post).

By joining a school or online course is a good way to start learning the basics as it involves codes and all that. I know this because I'm going to be learning it and graphic designing also.

PSD to HTML is too hard for converting images into Html, once I tried and it took nearly 2 days for converting alone.
After this we need to use Css for loading fast on the web, add Css color codes instead of color images
PHP is the markup language to learn at this time, but it takes time for understanding, know what to do when to do, where to do.

Use w3schools or Tizag for learning Html, CSS etc.
Learning Web design is good for beginners as they can understand what is a website and where to store etc.
First give a try for Html, Css and C programming.

Your suggestions are really helpful for they contain the list of things on what to do by a would-be web designer. I think it is more helpful when there are tutorials appended for every items you have listed. And it is more welcome, if you include the sample of your work and process on how you did it.

You mention Illustrator and Photoshop. I was wondering if it was feasible to use opensource tools like Gimp and Inkspace, our would I be missing to many features and be out of standards everybody uses.

I may add. For me, web designing is more on personal attempt. It is one's desire on what type or style to have. In my case, I have created a website through a free blogger platform. I just select the template for my design and then customize it by using available designs, color, fonts, among others.

I also want to learn web designing. Prior to launching my websites, I never have had this desire to learn web designing. However, after I launched my website, I felt a necessity to learn web designing. Every time we cannot hire someone to do coding and without any knowledge, we will be lost

For the average website, you may as well forget Flash even exists. You can thank Apple for that, since Flash was not supported on iOS for the longest time. Even before that, though, Flash's popularity has been declining for years. Most of the things we used to use Flash for can be done with CSS Animations and/or JavaScript.

Inkscape is a reasonably good vector program for web artwork, but there is a bit of a learning curve to it. If you're already familiar with Illustrator, you probably won't like working with it at all. I have no experience with it for print projects, so I can't say how well it works for that.
