I live in a small, rural town and I would like to use my freelance writing skills to pick up some local jobs. I would love to do a weekly article in my newspaper or any other writing that local private clients might need. What is a good way to market my skills so that I have a chance of obtaining a local writing gig?

Most people will demand to see a writing sample before they hire you. Create articles which you think your clients might be interested in and post them on a blog you'll be using solely to showcase your writing. Send the editor of your local newspaper a query letter to find out if they want another good writer to join their "team." Provide them with your URL so they'll take a look at your writing.

To get local clients to hire you, you'll need to pay for a classified ad in your local paper. A great classified ad will get people to act [like visit your site to find out more about you].

If you just want to work locally you could use flyers and promote yourself that way. Placing them on cars or in the mail of your possible future clients.
Word of mouth can really one of the best ways to get some gigs. As mentioned by @Smithee a ad in your local newspaper could bring in some new clients.

Hi! I would suggest for you to:

1. In-person marketing. The best way still to market yourself as a writer is to find clients around your town. And to do that, you need to go to events and places where a writer might be needed. Also, make a business card as well, this can make you more professional and easy to contact.

2. Cold calling. You can also try calling companies who might be in need of writers. You can ask for openings this way, just make sure to check out their site for the requirements you might need.

3. Building your own brand. Why not post on bulletin boards a few of your sample articles and your contact number? Or maybe try to put your contact number and your job as a freelance writer in your car (like a sticker)? All these little things can certainly help in marketing yourself as a writer.

Good luck!

That's a good suggestion - the use of flyers to promote your product or services is a good tool for local targets. You can also post the flyers in bulletin boards. Over here, we usually see small posters that has the word Tubero and phone number. That simple flyer is posted on electric posts or fences and sometimes even on trees. Tubero means plumber. That is their way in promoting their trade in the community. And I find it effective.

Marketing your self in a rural area would need more of your physical presence unless modern technologies are in place. For you that want to start writing, you'll need to have samples of your articles on print.you could hand write it or have them printed.

If the mobile service is working there, you could place a call to the editor of the paper indicating your interest to work with them,if the reply is in the negative, volunteer to work free, this might enable you gather some knowledge and you might be employed at the end of the day,if you're good.

If there's internet service, then you open a blog on blogger, the platform is free and post some articles on it,which you could be using as samples when asked.

You could advertise through the words of the mouth, get to let people know your intentions, you might be connected to those that need your services through one of those.

Print flyers and handbills and hand it to people and place some on strategic locations.

If you eventually get your first job try to do your best and you will get more people through referral.

It does not matter what you are living in a small rural town. We are all on the internet, and the internet is a jungle. There are countless opportunities to earn but also to lose money. Jungle is good for hunting if you are strong and determined. Slamming quickly extinct in the jungle. Be a king of animals.

Nice reviews here so far, I strongly agree with vampa's point and to an extent with Verde42 also, physical presence to may be necessary since you narrow your scope to be more of rural, after adopting vampa's steps you can now follow lovely's physical presence opinions too

One of the best who is he which you can use to market your skills in your local area is by printing of posters. A lot of people in my area have used this method to get a whole lot of customers and clients.

It do work actually and it much easier to propagate your business in a small town especially if your business is unique but always diversify when necessary because competition kill busineses faster in small environment.

Yeah I agree with you. Offline businesses in a small environment compete a lot and I have observed this in the sense that if you do not have a good marketing strategy, you will go out of business

That's for sure so the best is to always make goods or services very unique likewise your marketing style so it won't be easy for the competitors to kick you out of the market.

Definitely. Making your marketing style and services unique when you make people to patronize you. It will also make you to be very competitive in such a business.

Social media platforms are a great place to start advertising such a skill. You can do so by writing free articles on your social media accounts and telling people to hire you for such writings. You can also promote such skills in freelancing platforms.

You really gets what most people don't understand, if people see that your business is paying, then they start to venture into the business, if yours is not too strong and satisfies customer well, you might be swept aside
What exist most is copy business so as a business person you always think ahead of others and always keep your business secret to yourself.

Showcasing oneself in a rural area can be a little bit difficult except if there is still tons of educated people there. If there is not. I will advice you to go to where you will be needed.

You will have to look for a bigger town, that's just the honest truth, you can't be a writer and expect to get good gigs from small locality, the turn out will be very poor.

Probably set up some advertising posts on stratagical places. If you can rent a work space within the town cebtral business district even the better.Good luck:)

If it is a rural area well you don't need more of showcasing there I think what you neef is just being closer to the people there and tell them what they stand to gain when they partner with you.
That's why I said if the majority of the people are literate. You don't expect illiterate people to take something they don't understand serious. They will think you want to dupe them.
