I just read about this news. I am not using GitHub but this might be a good news for other developers, especially those who have created projects and would like to share with others.

Are anyone using GitHub here?

I use GitHub! was really exited when i saw the news cause that means i will have little reason to use GitLab. Although the fact that it's now a Microsoft product still annoys me.
Am yet to test if GitHub pages can be made private. If it can, that will be really exciting \o/

GitLab has so much more, for my needs. I work in a team where we use GitLab's free CI to instantly push changes to websites - it's really convenient and of course, free. Plus, I don't really trust GitHub, now it's owned by Microsoft.
GitHub, for me, is the place to go for open source. But for closed source or small teams, I think GitLab or BitBucket is the place to go.

I agree with @ICTman1076. GitHub has been around for many years, but after it was bought by Microsoft last year I guess it doesn't have to the same level of privacy as it did before (considering all the fuss regarding Microsoft and how they secretly collect information about their Windows-users).

GitHub is the source for a lot of open source software, and a lot of good code too, but as a small developer, you may want to find something else.

Gitlab CI? from my understanding this is also possible with GitHub.
While i agree with you that Microsoft has issues with user privacy, i will rather not want to think too much about it cause the worst they could do is train AI to learn from codebase as they are currently experimenting with VS intellicode. It's not like they will take my private code and claim it theirs. If companies like google still uses GitHub, i guess i can also use it cause it works and not otherwise cause it currently owned by Microsoft

This is the firs time that I have heard this GitHub as a good repository for free. That means that it is an open program then. But as one of the comments I have read it here, it was acquired by Microsoft. Now, how is it now?

Yep, in June last year, Microsoft announced that they would buy Github for $7.5 billion. Apparently, Github had run into financial and leadership issues and was looking for a new CEO, while Microsoft on their side had decided that they wanted to embrace open-source technology.

This made a lot of Github users concerned that Microsoft would turn Github in something that'd hurt its developers, causing many to switch to similar services like Gitlab.

Not to mention, I personally believe it's good for the internet that we have a lot of different services, instead of everything being controlled by only a few massive corporations.

I believe Github requires external tools (I may be wrong, correct me if I am), many of which cost money. Gitlab does it all internally, so it's just easier. And it's free.

You are right. Open source programs should stand alone or stand out so that free users could avail of them. It would be a burden to anyone if they are purchased and controlled by big company in the Internet world.

No, both Github and Gitlab are web-based Git repositories meaning the only tool you're required to use is Git, which is completely free. The benefits of GitLab is that it's open-sourced and although you have to pay for its additional features, they're cheaper than Github's. Other options include BitBucket, but I haven't really been using it so I can't say anything about it.

By external tools, I mean that for Continuous Integration (CI) you need external tools. My fault, should've clarified that

I use github mostly for the private projects these days. Before this I used to use bitbucket and the gitlab. I think now that they are offering lot better options I think it'd be harder for the bitbucket and gitlab to keep up with the customers. I know for sure that Microsoft owning the github may make it unsafe for data privacy but I think free repositories in private is a too good to miss deal.
