I do not see any reason why anybody is going to be sleeping on Amazon right now. Making money through affiliate channels is not popular with people but then if you want to make it and get a lot of time into convincing people to buy then you are definitely going to make it. I advise you seek education before moving in.You can always make money with Amazon. It's a reputable company. Amazon has become synonymous with online shopping so even if someone has never bought anything online and you direct them to Amazon, if they need the product, they'll buy it.
You'll probably make more money if you post reviews of products on your blog from time to time or recommend products that will solve your site visitors problems [assuming that they come to your site seeking answers to problems].
Thing though is you won't make much money if save for having a referral link on your side bar or elsewhere on your site, you do nothing to promote products you'd like your site visitors to buy. Some people need a gentle nudge to do something.
Very good observation there and a best advice for start ups if affilliate marketing is your thing.Traffic source is very important and more especially targeted audience that can turn into potential leads.Yes one needs to continue working on their content untill more people buy into their idea of the types of products and services you are offering. Then upgrade to platforms like Amazon where you need to be a little bit of a pro to match their targets like you have put it.Amazon affiliate program is a good program, but in my opinion, new affiliates should not start with it.
Here is the reason....
Amazon requires you to make 3 qualifying sales every three months
Sales are the conversion of traffic
If we say your conversion rate is 3% that means you need 300 visitors every three months
For a new website that depends on ranking on Google, it is not easy to get that much traffic in that short time.
But, if you are doing Youtube videos, that is achievable depending on the niche and promotion method
So, for new affiliates, I suggest to wait until the time they get traffic, then join Amazon affiliate program
