I was wondering if this was a trustworthy way to get web-hosting. For instance, do most of those services provide good hosting? Will most of them stay in business so a customer doesn't have to worry about moving to another host? What is the motive for a company using such a strategy? Do they profit in ways other than getting a larger forum?

I have posted on forums and earned free hosting. However, the hosting package I earned was free only for three months. After three months. I had to pay the hosting fees. I could have continued but had to abort because the regular hosting charge was very high. I have also earned free hosting by paying the credits I had earned through forum posting.

There is a way to have free hosting. So, if its free there must be some intent on payment in a different way. I am hosted by a training platform, so I pay a low monthly fee for my training etc, and the hosting is included. This particular company has been online since 2005 and are very popular.

However, should you not want to pay for the training side of things and only want to be hosted, you can do that as well as they offer some free websites, with their free for life account. Your free sites will be hosted for life but only if you stay as a free member, after that, you can't go back to free member status.
