When starting a small business, one need to come up with different ideas and names for ones brand and products. Sometimes these names can be copyright protected, e.g Coka-Cola. Fair enough, although i have heard of cases where a business research and choose a name for it brand, only for a bigger company to appear in the future with a recent license to that name. In a situation like that, what can be done?

I haven't even come across a situation where a brand legally adopts another brand's name. From the very beginning you would have been notified if the name you submitted for approval/registration is taken already and again you have more than one option to choose from.

do your researches before giving your brand a name, if you can't find any information, then you're more likely to face no issues even if another brand with same name as yours exists because it would be unpopular at the first place that there are no information about it in internet

Am not actually doubting this mate , all am saying is that copyright is not really an issue if one had from the time of feasibility plan gotten a good brand name that is not in existence .

But incase of unforseen circumstances ,it's best for the small business to just have copyright even no matter how small the business is ,it could become big in the future

A brand name shouldn't be a problem because even after normal research their are agencies that overseas this too avoid issues like this so after choosing ur desired brand name you also go to this agencies to confirm to avoid this type of problem

Absolutely, but the challenge is that most of the small businesses are not formally registered they just pick brand names and that's all.
