I don't know about you but sometimes I sit and think about how my life would be different if I was wise enough to buy up alot of domain names back before the internet became as big as it is now. URL's with 3 and 4 letters that everyone is looking to grab is selling for crazy amounts of money. Fast forward to today, since we can't rewind time, how do you re-adjust to the times and find out what may become a big hit later? For example, I sometimes play around with unregistered URL's and try to figure out what MAY be profitable later. Like what if you bought ebay.com months before they became a household name or before they existed? Do you think that since ebay.com was registered to you already they would of tried to find a different business name or do you think they would of put in an offer to buy your domain?

ebay, facebook, google are not just domain names these are brands. wwww.ebay.com has value because it is a website of a big brand. Let me illustrate this. You register a domain White Tiger. You continue renewing the domain. Once day a person buys the domain because he has a men's shoe brand called White Tiger. Your $100 investment could not be $10K income.

You would have to have a priori knowledge about which companies would be forming and what names they would be using. To register a common name in advance that they needed would be like playing the lottery, unless it was such a common name that it had at least a few hundred or a few thousand dollars behind its value for simplicity. If you owned buy.com or restaurant.com then you know you're going to get money out of that, since it's a basic word that everyone would want to have for many types of business models. If you registered whitetigershoes.com and there's no such company or people weren't even interested in white tigers, then if a company did form they'd say "well, that one's taken. I guess we'll go with wtshoes.com since it's shorter or white-tiger-shoes.com instead since it's the same thing anyway", and they usually do.

It isn't the name that makes it worth money, but the value behind the name before the company can get to it that makes it money. People may think "hey, I have ebay.com so now I will make a fortune!" only to find out that the company decided to register e-bay.com instead.

They may offer to buy it later for pennies compared to what it's worth, since they may still want it and it can't be legally used for profit if they trademarked it, but the real value is in having common domains that can be used anywhere or (if lucky) having just one domain name that the company needs and has no other alternative to.

If you can find that, then you will make a lot of money off of it. Even if it's only temporarily owned. Recently, someone registered Google.com through Google Domains by mistake and was paid $12,000 by Google to get it back. They only had it for a few hours, but they made $12,000 for it.

Sometimes even an error can make you money if you do it correctly!

I think they would have found a different business name. It's easy to look at big brand names now and think that if only I had got there before they did, but those names were built up over time.

You're right, they usually do. The only exception is if they're one of the grandfathered names from before the internet revolution for online stores and services. Something like Sears.com or Amway.com would always be of value, since the chances of them using sears-online.com or Amway.net are a lot less likely. They're big enough and established enough in the old world to where they would pay for those names and rightfully so. But yeah, any newer company that doesn't have or need to have that name as their .com? They'll select other names and make the name they select advertised and popular to the public instead.

Actually, nowadays, there has been gold rushes regarding other domain extensions like .io. For instance, certain 3 letter .io names have a probable value of between 2000 USD and 3000 USD. Note, other big hitters include .xyz and .club.

Note, I got my idea for an average value from a free commonly used online domain appraisal service.

You mean tools online, those domain appraisal services are shit, they cannot evaluate a domain properly, not even estimate.

Are you sure? They normally list quite a few domains which have sold for similar prices. In that case, they seem to be right on the money. On the other hand, I have yet to find a domainer that will buy something approaching the online tool's, normally Estibot or Valuate, price.

Yes you could make money from domain buying and selling, if the price you are selling the domain isn't too high the company or individual may consider buying it. For example if you are selling at not more than $5000 I guess. Otherwise they can alter the name a little or go for a different name entirely.

It a two way thing and must times it about luck. The big brand now have worked over time to make the name outstanding. who would have thought of the name eBay to even want to buy and keep for the future. Some names are just owners idea that another person might not even think about.

There will have still had a different name and still went ahead to make the name a household name,so it will have needed a domainer to be in luck to be able to have a domain name especially with dot com extension which these big brands would want to buy.

Buying or Selling domains are not easy work you have to get more experiences by doing all kind of practical works. I think you can hold by buying possible domain which would have good value in future.

Buying and selling of domains is not easy task you have to research very well and know the types of names to buy, what is trending in the domain market and how to price domains very well.

Yeah that's the fact... They will definitely look for a more better and suitable name...to suit whatever they want

I dont think they would put in offer to buy your domain they might create their own with same name and end it with another TLD like .net ,.tl and others
