So, I would love to register a domain, but a search showed my preferred name is unavailable. I'm thinking of going for the .net of the same name but wondering if it's advisable to do so.

I've registered a few domains in the past and they were all .coms. Are there downsides to going for a .net extension?

You did not told us what domain name you want, so there is nothing to advice much.
.com is much popular, so it is common to not to find it always; but using other still needs to know what site you are willing to launch.
If it is Educational, then take .edu
If it is some Organisation, then take .org
.net is normally for Network programs andtechnologies.
(In case of MMO, any domain will work)

Such websites normally use .org for domain in absense of .com this represents their organised sensiblity in online; using .net is fine when it is used as women's network.
So go ahead with the work / action of your site.

.NET domains are almost universally recognized and normal to use them on just about any website. Go for it! There are no disadvantages to using a .net TLD.

There isn't anything I'd classify as a disadvantage of having a dot net extension vs a dot com. One thing for sure though is that people tend to type in dot com if they are randomly searching for a site. For this reason many prefer dot com as the first option. But given they already know the domain name they would simply enter it as given. If I'm sure this is the name I want for my site I'd go ahead with the dot net extension since the first option is already taken.

Well .com and .net are equally good but it depends on your usage, for what reason you want to use it. Personally, i would recommend you using . com but as in your case .net is available, it is also not bad but no that much good either.
So, find synonyms or words related to your domain name and try them maybe they are available.

I agree with what have been said above. Since the ".com" is the default domain extension for the most people, it'll give you many benefits that you won't get from a ".net" domain name. But if you really want the name, remember to make sure that the owner of the ".com" doesn't have a trademark on the it.

I feel there is not any difference between the two, if there is , then it's just a megre difference. Many times I type .com at the end of a .net website but the results are the same, I end up in the same site, same speed, no difference.

I say go for the unique names. The ones that end with .online or club, or whatever.

beermoneyfor.men certainly sounds better than beermoneyformen.net

.net is all played out. And if the .net is different from the .com, it just means they beat you to the .com
