Bitshares (BTS) is an open source financial platform and decentralized exchange (DEX) on blockchain. It was created in order to try and eliminate the risk involved from using a centralized exchange. Bitshares was launched in July 2014, it was founded by Dan Larimer, co-founder of Steem and EOS. He initially started the project with Charles Hoskinson, who himself is also the co-founder of Cardano and Ethereum. Bitshares was the first to come up with the concept of Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) algorithm, which later prove to be a good consensus algorithm allowing for a faster and more flexible network.
