Many people nowadays have created their own forums, each one serving a purpose for its audience. Forum creators (Such as Mr. B) have made a forum and hope to make money from it. Here are some ways to monetize your forum:

  1. Google Adsense: Even though Google Adsense has a bad reputation about not being a very good advertising company, it is MUCH better than many of the other ad providing websites, it has a good payout rate, and it is less likely to turn scam than any other advertising partner. They customize their ads according to your website which can be good because the topic is relevant and so, will draw more clicks. Even so, because it is Google, they have rules about how many placements there can be on a page and some ad networks do not work well with Google Adsense. The only other drawback to Adsense is the fact that their ads have a low click-through rate. This is because people are so used to seeing Adsense ads that they do not even notice it. Otherwise, it is a pretty good ad network.
  2. CPA and CPM Networks: These ad services are a great way to fill those extra ad spaces and get extra income. CPA stands for cost-per-action or basically you get paid for what your user does. These ads give a LOT of money if your users are going through them but the problem is that many users don't do the actions required by those ads. A more sure way of getting income are CPM ads or Cost per Mille Impressions ads. These ads pay you for every impression the ads get or basically, how many visitors are on your webpage. These ads do not give a high amount of income but do guarantee income even if your users are not clicking on the ads.
  3. Affiliate Networks: Yet another such advertising network for monetizing one's forum are affiliate ads. These ads require the user to click on the ad and do something, usually purchasing something or signing up, and the poster gets paid through commission. You can post your own Affiliate ads or get one from an affiliate network website. Either way, you get paid if the user finishes signing up or purchases a product.
  4. Selling Sticky Threads or Ad Spaces: As you guys have probably noticed, BeerMoneyForums is selling ad spaces and sticky threads. These are a great way to expose your intended audience to your product if you post it on the right website/forum. These spaces are usually sold at a fixed price unlike CPM/CPA/Affiliate Network ads so the forum admin does not have to worry about fluctuating income and the Buyer does not have to worry of paying more than they can handle.
  5. Sponsorship/Donations: The sponsorship and donation income can actually add up to a lot! Sponsorship income can be generated by teaming up with a company and promoting their product. AN example can be if your forum specializes in computers, a computer company can give you some money to create a category all about their company. Donations can bring in a lot of income because some users just want to help others and are willing to give the admin some of the money they've generated if they feel that the forum is good. Incentives such as blue name tags (From Mr. B) can make this process easier.
  6. Sell SOMETHING: Sometimes, forums sell products in order to both promote their website and generate some extra income. This can come in a form of a merc store or just selling digital goods, or a service. Many websites have found success in selling books.
In conclusion, I believe that these are some of the best ways to monetize your forum. Hopefully you can create a forum as sucessful as BeerMoneyForums!

You can run ads from various ad networks. When it comes of online advertising, Adsense is best. Along with adsense, you can also run ads from other ad networks. You can also sell ad space. You can find advertisers for your ad space on various ad marketplace.

I have to admit that this is the first time I write and participate in forum. I usually often notice the ads that are displayed in every forum page. They are in various categories, but they are in small images.

And I have to ask myself how does this forum site earn revenue. Wit those ads spreaded all over the forum page are enough for the forum to earn? What about those forums that are paying their members or users in joining and participating with the comment and article posting?

Well, the following are possible marketing and advert techniques for forum to earn:

1. Donations
2. Ad free theme subscription
3. Amazon and eBay menu tab
4. Selling reviews, listings
5. Q&A functions
6. Adsense
7. CPA and CPM Networks
8. Affiliate Networks
9. Selling Text Links
10. Selling Banner Advertisement or Ad spots
11. Selling "sticky" threads
12. Sponsorship
13. Private Members Area
14. Selling Something
15. Joining a contest and selected as an award winning forum with cash prize

Sone of those 15 may be working with or without spending a penny for some are free.

The best ways are AdSense, Affiliate Marketing, CPA and CPM Networks, and Sponsorship.

"Nothing will happen if no muscle is stretched" goes the secret technique of monetizing the forum.

I am sure I don't stand a chance for helping anyone after reading the post of @Nocturnal Writer but all I can say is adding your referral links to your signature and keep a close eye on good paying sites mentioned by knowledgeable community helps. I am a new participant in forums so my knowledge is limited up to this point.

Do not worry tomorrow new contest and so on and maybe is your expertize, but even if tomorrow you don't have knowledge in the topic, you could do a little bit of research and come up with the most helpful and original answer and eventually win.

Adsense is indeed the best advertising network but what really works on forums like YpayZ.com which is inclined to webmaster resources and discussions is direct advertising, a well established forum is overwhelmed with advertising inquiries from affiliate program owners, ad network owners etc.

Obviously, advertisements like PPC and CPM, along with Affiliate Marketing are great options for monetizing any forum. Another option is to run Paid Subscription Forum with a one-time joining fee and a monthly or yearly subscription, which can generate a good income to the forum.

Paid subscription is great when you have premium content, exclusive and real money making tutorials describing step by step the method and access to premium webmaster tools. Yeah this monetization option is good for forums.

I think this time I will directly come to the point, instead of beating around the bush. There are numerous ways to monetize a forum and the key is to find out which one suits you the best. I think everybody will agree on the fact that the amount of money you can earn from a forum has a direct linkage to the volume of traffic it can generate and that is where the quality of content comes into play. As in any other online content management businesses, content is the king in the matter of forums too. Given below are some methods by which you can monetize your forums:
  • Online ad agencies - This off course is the most popular method, but you should be able to get enough traffic to earn handsome money out of this. I think everybody is well aware of this method and Google Adsense is the best online ad agency. There are a number of alternatives to Adsense like Chitika, Infolinks etc., but still Adsense lead the show.
  • Sticky threads – I have seen many forums using this method to earn money. Sticky thread is a thread which actually sticks for long and you need to pay an amount to get this feature activated for a given period of time. The longer it stays there, the higher will be the visibility. Users normally opt this to advertise their products and services.
  • VIP membership – This is another area you can monetize on. But I have seen only a few forums doing this. They sell premium membership which entitles users with various privileges like giving access to a restricted area where a free member is not supposed to enter.
  • Signature space – Some forums charge you money to use signature space to advertise your links. It is a good advertising medium if you are able to keep your visibility and reputation high in a forum.
  • Renting ad space – A forum owner can also earn some pretty good money by renting ad space in forums for a fee. This could be banners or text based advertisements.
  • Use an affiliate network like Commission Junction, Share A Sales or programs like eBay or Amazon. You will get a commission from sale of the product if a visitor uses the ad to purchase it.
  • Separate advertising section – This is another area where a user is allowed to put referral links by paying a fee to the owner. Usually user is not allowed to share referral links in other sections and it also acts as a boosting factor for this method.
The list is not exhaustive and you can find a lot of other ways to monetize a forum. But still quality content, healthy discussions and high volume of traffic are the leading factors that affect success of a forum.

Adsense can be good or bad based on where you use it, so I would be careful using them with a forum because it is possible that someone may post a link or content they do not like, and if an advertiser says anything about it or it affects them in a way that is beyond your control to change, then they can keep funds from the content provider (forum owner) and shut down their adsense for no legitimate reason at all. Adsense is the best way to make money per click and per impression, but I cannot recommend them after my own experiences with them.

I have seen Bidvertiser used as a viable alternative to adsense, even though they don't pay as much. They are far more relaxed on what they will let you place ads next to, and how you can place them.

In some cases, you can use Popads or Popcash to monetize going to select pages or areas of a forum, or to upload or download content from a file transfer page or library area.

If you have a youtube account and you're using a 3rd party ad network that lets you make money off of youtube videos (even without having an adsense account), then you can use Adrev, Maker Studios, FullScreen, BigFrame, Machinima, or FilmSection to pair their network with your paypal account and make money that way, since they are able to circumvent Google Adsense's control of Youtube and provide their own ads and payment to you directly for it. You can then place instructional videos or content anywhere on the site, and each new visitor who sees it will earn you ad revenue.

Commission Junction aka CJ Affiliate
is another way to earn money, through selling products or services that they offer on a designated area or link on your forums, either at the bottom of pages or somewhere on an admin signature. Usually a few people buy products or services this way, and the more it is seen, the greater the chances are that they do. It isn't as lucrative as banner ads and pop-unders, but it does make a good amount if or when people buy them. Another way you can make money by advertising products or services is with Amazon Associates.

If you have ebooks or professional marketing material that is exclusive and in-demand, you can also offer that on your forums either as a part of your signature or a dedicated area where people can buy tools and info they need that can help them or boost their existing business further.

If you add links to games and entertainment, you can have a portal page that has advertisements on them which people who may not be as active in forums would still visit (even as non-members) to play them which would also make you ad revenue daily.

There are several more ways to monetize a forum, but these are just a few ways I see that can help.

It is one toughest thing to monetize forums as Members won't click those ads because everyone knows it is an advertisement.
My best method is to monetize a forum is when it is large, not in small.
Go for the CPM ads or sell adspace directly to the advertisers.
For example Ypayz forums you need to find related advertisers that are for specific categories.
Try to contact with Webhosting companies to have their banner on the forum.
Sell sticky threads for members. but this works only on large forums.

P.s You haven't said more details of forum whether you have a large forum or type of Niche?

A forum will be profitable if you managed to make it's community grow. You won't get advertisers and donations if no one is posting on your forum. You can start making your forum successful by advertising it to similar forums. This may sound silly but everything can start on small scale. Invite your personal friends to be the founding members.

The best way to monetize a forum (start earning money) is to accept donations and display ads on your forum. You can display adverts on your forum with Google Adsense. You also need to think about how you are going to get website hits to your online community.

I'd say people should start with the viglink. They seem to have good conversion for the forum. And if you can post from just links alone. That would be more than enough for the passive income. I suggest amazon links too. Make sure to use the sticky threads for the amazon based afffiliate links. And then tehre are some of the ad rotator plugins. that you can use and then change the type of the ads being used. for each one of us it'd be lot different from what I have learned.

If you have a forum or joined a forum which are the most effective ways to monetize a forum these day.
You can use the following means:

Selling of ads space to advertisers

Get donations from users if any

Monetize with Google AdSense
Monetize with affiliate program
You can make money through sponsored post

Monetize with affiliate program
I'd say that skimlinks and the viglinks seems to be a good option for anyone who wants to monetize. Because they seem to have the niche content ads. And you may definitely benefit. I have seen it works for some of the admin forums too. Though I'd be skeptical about some of the ad networks on some niches like say garden or so.

There are many ways to monetize your forum site.
Sponsored post is one of the best way. It is when an advertiser pay to sponsor a post whereby showing there ads on that post.
Banner Ads: you can also monetize your website through banner ads. Advertisers pay for image banner ads to be shown

Banner ads only work when you have traffic and the advertisers need to see those stats. Then only then they are going to be paying for it like say 99$ for month type of the banner ad cost. Because banner ads are blocked by adblocker. So monetizing becomes more difficult these days.

Yes you are right. This days adblocker do block banner ads.
But that doesn't mean we should looking for ways to monetize our forum website.
Having a forum website is good or even great. If you look at the forum very well you will derive many ways to monetize the forum.
For example, you can lock a post and require an amount from members to unlock the post. From there you have monetize the forum website

You can use affiliate links. As that tends to work for most. I'd say you should monetize through paid subscription of some sort. That also works. Most people don;t often make use of the browsers like brave browser but if you join them then you may definitely benefit from earning BAT token. I think that can be one good option for some time.
