Sometimes you get some videos in the recommended list that don't even match with the content you usually watch, some reasons that shouldn't be taken on consideration of course are :
1-The Video's length : because videos that i noticed, some are long and some are only few seconds .
2- Video's Category : as i said, the videos don't match with the content you're watching .
3- Video's region : i keep getting videos recommended from different regions .

So what do you think that youtube uses to recommend videos to people, based on what standards

Most of the time it is by category, although sometimes youtube's algorithm just acts in a weird way, sometimes it recommends you a really old video of a random account although sometimes those random accounts are sub accounts of the people or pages that you always watch of, not sure why youtube does this

I think it has to do with your past search or keywords, sometimes it has to even do with things you searched on google, at least that's what I noticed about mine. Things I search for on google, like movie reviews and stuff and youtube actually brings movies reviews for me.
I also get videos from outside my region so perhaps it depends on our search and keywords.
Then again. Youtube recommends videos like the ones you've watched previously.
And lastly, if you subscribe to a channel it sometimes bring something like this "this person's viewers also watch this". I hope you get it

I'm not a hundred percent sure but I can answer this based on what I have heard. YouTube algorithm recommends you those videos that it thinks are somehow related to the ones you have searched for or have been viewing in recent times. I know sometimes the recommended videos can be weird and nothing related to what you like to watch but it's just an algorithm it can also make mistakes sometimes

I think also youtube shares data with google in which google I think does, there are times where like I get recommendations for the stuffs I watch on twitch and sometimes also recommendations for the sites I visits, I was once doing faucet sites and I got some crypto related vids pop-up at my feed on youtube

yeah most of these big sites or platforms share data and that is why most times when you engage on some sites you will discover that you get pop-up adds in relation to those activities in your in Facebook, i wouldn't know if you have experience such

I think youtube recommendation based on the people likes or number or rank , because they want you to see what is the best in your interest , that my opinion it could be right or wrong .
