A certain local bank asked me to power their website and I chose WordPress. I understand that WordPress has good core security though there's insufficient security for themes. When I consulted a friend he said that the themes and plugins can be manipulated and therefore not suitable for a bank website. What do people in this forum have to say? Is it such a bad idea?

A bank site no matter how small should be extremely secure and customers need to have faith in the system that they are using. Wordpress will always have security flaws but those are patched up quickly usually. The problem is like your friend said the themes and plugins. Because they are made by external users which is not great and there will always be vulnerabilities in those.

It might be a good idea to buy an extra plugin only for security and also to use the https:// protocol for the website. Note, the other option would be coding a blog and theme from scratch and that would be vastly more expensive and time-consuming. Surely, WordPress cannot be hacked as easily as some say or thousands of companies wouldn't use it.

Maybe, the OP needs to look around for good deals on security mods. It might even be possible to get one for under 50 USD. Perhaps some can even be found on online auctions like eBay.
