As reported by Interesting Engineering, the Australian government currently discusses the proposal to make the National ID requirement a mandatory for whoever wished to make a new social media account. This in part of the effort by the government to minimize cyberbullying, scam and online abuse. If ever passed, the bill would require the Australian citizens to submit national identification like driver license, passport or ID card before they were able to make a new account.

Taking look at the high scam rate in many countries , its best to consider a national id because a lot of users participate in many fraudulent activities online

It is right step of Australian government, but I think it is better that social networking sites make requirement of ID mandatory to join social networking sites. It will help in minimizing cyberbullying and scam worldwide

As much as such a measure would lead to violation of privacy, it may be the solution to hate speech, cyber bullying and scams on social media.

I am agree with you many peoples are misusing social networking sites. If some one doing it too much than it is better to suspend their account for ever,

The rate is alarming too as a large percentage of people around the world almost complain of getting scammed,so the government needs to do something about it

If it happened, there both good and bad will happen.
users will be reduced from the social sites and newcomers who started their business using the social platform, which would be damage. Govt will monitor easily the users info and If anyhow users data leaked many important data will go to wrong hand.

That is an awesome decision to deal with cybercrime in the country. But scams and cyberbullying will continue from the other countries who have not adopted the same strategy.

It would continue if those country , don't take the necessary steps in Introducing the id, to reduce the amount of cyber bullying , most especially some country whose government don't care about the citizen

Yeah, and there so many such countries who don't really care about the citizens. I wish someday most countries will adopt this use of social media ID verification to curb cybercrimes.

If they do , the cyber crime on social media would fall , but it shows the government arent ready to do something about it , that is the real problem, they are more intersted in getting revenue from the citizen pocket

Yeah, right. Most governments right now are just looking for ways to continue getting revenue and talking so many promises through politics. But they fail to focus on most important things like this cybercrime issue.

Signup is much easy at social networking sites. so peoples are making more than one account and they are also using it to cheat other peoples. Although I have not its experience but I read about it.

This is quite a good development ,because social media is filled with many hate speeches ,which has not really aimed at promoting unity . This will make users to be careful with their posts.

Many have experienced it , its been use to trick people to invest their saving in their scam platform and when people invest in the platform they block the person

O
This is a surprise to me , but what of other citizens in other country , the scam might not necessarily be from within the country , it could be cross border. I hope the private data of users are not sold
You just took the words off my hands. Cyber crime has nothing to do with location or any country. Unless this can be implemented worldwide or else it might just be a waste

Yeah, right. Hate speech is one of the crimes that social media ID verification will handle well. There are so many of such cases happening now and the perpetrators cannot be found easily since they use false information when signing up.

The issue is not just for them to be caught , there is no law against hate speeches in social media that is active. People easily escape with their hate speeches
