A dark web moderator called Conor Herrell was arrested for allegedly controlling the website AlphaBay. The website was used for selling drugs, guns, credit card numbers, but it was mostly used for selling drugs. People could buy those items using bitcoin, monero or ether. The site is no longer available and Conor will be spending 11 years in prison.

If actually he was paid through dark web which we know is a bit difficult to trace transaction, how was he able to be caught? because most dark web users uses fake details and un traceable payment method

True but this is not the case when it comes to cryptocurrency transaction over the dark web . Nevertheless it is a good thing to see that things are changing

Well, dark net or regular net, cryptocurrency protocol is still the same so the authority can trace crypto transaction like usual regardless if they're using it on internet or dark net.

yeah, they are using the anonymity feature of the cryptocurrencies to take advantage, hope that more illegal business will be caught

It is a good thing that even without KYC, persons who carry out transactions are still traceable. I always thought that the anonymity offered by crypto will give too much room for criminals.

Yeah it has anonymity but its not 100% when compared to the use of bank and flatcurrency ,so crypto been anonymous doesn't mean there is no check

I really get that now and look forward to more fraud perpetrators tracked and been forced to face the wrath of the law. Be it on the dark web or regular one.

I think there is presently a secret collaboration between different wallets and the crime agency which makes tracking of cryptocurrency transaction easy

Yeah thats all what we hope for so that more perpetrators can be caught and this might scare away some fraudsters which is growing higher

with big crypto wallets probably, I'm not sure with obscure ones, as obscure wallets seems to be out of the radar for most people as only a couple of people uses them

This news reveals a great victory against the fight against sites that carry out transactions to exchange illegal items.
Many believe that transactions on the dark web cannot be traced, but currently the US government has developed tools that allow them to monitor and track certain connections and transactions.
We sacrifice privacy in favor of reducing cybercrime.
