So as I'm sure everyone already knows, GoDaddy has a one year $12 hosting + free domain deal. It's pretty nice when starting a new site because not only does it allow you to start a site for virtually nothing but it also means that if the site fails then you haven't lost much.

But the problem arises when your one year is up. You're going to be paying around $5 a month after that. You could just create another account and transfer your site, but who wants to go through that every single year?

To be honest I think iPage is probably the best long term option. I've used them for around two years now to host one of my sites and they're great. You can get $2 per month hosting which is great.

So do you think it's better to just start off with iPage (or Blue Host, Host Gator, etc.) and pay the extra start up fees?

Or is the $12 start up worth the extra moving work you'll have to do a year later?

I hate Godaddy hosting that sucks for me, and they are good against domain registration. More than 50% people are not happy with Godaddy hosting as their service is very poor, but for domain registration is great.

Godaddy offers $1 per domain and you can get hosting for $10 per annum with some other hosting providers.

Ask yourself these questions:
1. How much time besides money I invested in this website?
2. How much revenue I earned from it?
3. Can I do this shit for another year? (If revenue barely cover maintenance costs you rather prefer trying other IM ventures)

Voila! And you've got your answer!!!

I've heard lots of people say this but to be honest GoDaddy has always worked fine for me.

Have you encountered problems with them specifically or is that just what you've heard?

While I think this is partially true, you can't really expect a website to be pulling in much revenue after only one year. It takes several years for a site to build up. Most highly successful sites that you see have been online for at least 5 years, usually closer to 10. If they had quite after their first year then they never would have made it as far as they did.

Godaddy is not good as a hosting provider. They are great only for domain buying and selling. The best hosting provider I have seen till now is Namecheap. They are offering awesome services o their clients at low cost. I have hosted many of mine and my clients sites on their servers. I have never faced any problem with their servers. Their customer support is also responsive and user-friendly.

@KenBrace I just got me a free domain name for a year and WordPress hosting for $1 per month, so in total I paid $12 dollars and $0.18 for ICANN :) I just got it yesterday but my site is up and running now and it works smoothly, I didn't encounter or get any problem.

My friend told that he got encountered problem and they suspended later without refund, and I may believe your site is small in traffic, that's why did not encountered a problem.
For $1 you will get small space, but still those host works great, check them at webhosting forums.
We know what we pay we get, but using discount coupon codes still work great.
What is the configuration of this Godaddy host, I mean space, bandwidth?

GoDaddy is great for us and we have been with them for 2 years now. There are many coupon codes that you can utilize to keep getting that cheap rate for hosting from GoDaddy. The bottom line is every hosting company is in competition, at the end of the day it is not going to be that much cheaper or more expensive than another. The key is to pay attention to what is included with these so called low prices and compare and contrast with the next competitor.

That is true, @KenBrace GoDaddy is efficient in its service. I have been using GoDaddy since the first time I created my first blog site and it was sometime in 2011. For almost 5 years now, I paid GoDaddy $9 before for one year and the latest which I have renewed my domain is $12 with a discount. I said for 5 years of relying from GoDaddy hosting I have not ever experienced anything amiss, trouble or whatever in the course of my blogging activity by using GoDaddy's hosting service.

Wow those are some crazy good prices!

Where did you purchase it from?

I recently purchased an SSL cert from a third party but was then informed by GoDaddy that I couldn't use third party SSLs. A bit aggravating considering the fact that their SSLs are a lot more expensive than what I can find elsewhere.

That is the catch to this service. I have been looking into this since yesterday and GoDaddy does have some stipulations with using their cheap service. You have to pay for other things that may impact your ability to keep everything at a reasonable price. Like the actual web site builder is sold separately where at WIX it is included in the price. I also researched the prices after the one year is up and compared the prices to other sites and they were not that much different. There is always access to coupons that can be used to cheapen the price.

I use Godaddy, there are always lovely coupons floating around and I found one that allowed hosting for $1 per month and an annual plan enables free ownership of domain name.

That's great just be prepared to either renew for roughly $5 per month after the first year, or transfer to another host that charges less (iPage, NameCheap, etc.).

I just recently used up my first $12 year on GoDaddy and decided to transfer to NameCheap. So far everything is great. The transfer went smoothly and I haven't experienced any issues with the server. They charged only $9 for the first year so that was awesome. The renewal price is $40 per year which isn't bad.

@KenBrace I'll be sticking to Godaddy, because there are so many coupons for the site always floating about and can help reduce the price, I did so research on it, but when the time is getting nearer, I'll check again and if I decide I need to move, I'll go for Namecheap. Thank you!

I am not with ipage but I think ipage offer is more viable compared to Go Daddy. You would definitely want to work with your website in the second year, therefore, how much you will have to pay next year should also be considered.

You have 1 year free hosting with a VPS in amazon services. Then if I wan't to spend something like 5 dollars I would use a VPS at digitalocean. I like the control of a VPS.

If you don't know how far your website will go, you can even host it in your home laptop for a while, if your ISP doesn't block the 80 port. I used the dynamic DNS from namecheap to do it.

There's several good companies out there that will let you get started with only $12, or slightly less for the first year if you're doing shared or virtual hosting and have a promo with them or a trial. The competition and saturation is so much that many people often have the opportunity to get just the basic services for $5 or $10 now, with or without the domain name provided.

But there's a few things I would like to say about Godaddy.

Godaddy is the most horrid and dishonorable hosting company I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. I am putting it very lightly and kindly when I say this. If this were not a public forum, I would be in a tirade of swear words telling you what I really think of them today.

They destroyed one of my businesses because they didn't understand the technology I was using and deleted the content I had of private works that took months to upload and configure. When I threatened to sue them in a court of law for this by destroying my property, they recanted after discovering I was local to them where their offices are and was ready to have my lawyer serve them papers immediately to start a court case against them for damages.

They recanted, but only after I spoke with corporate. When I explained to them what was done and what was misunderstood by the people they have managing things, they claimed they were "very, very sorry" and that "it should have never happened since it was not in violation of their Terms and was clearly misunderstood by the employees handling the servers and the data entrusted to them". They offered me a year free of service and a few months worth of my money back on the hosting, but I declined the service and just went with my money back.

I ended up switching to Namecheap which was and continues to be a much better solution. I don't have any of the issues or ridiculous misunderstandings from employees that were abound with Godaddy any longer, the quality of service is better, and the domain transfer was free. There are several good hosts out there, but this one has worked out better for me and since that day, I have helped about 457 people switch from Godaddy to other companies such as HostGator, 1and1, Dreamhost, and other competitors if not Namecheap so that they don't have to risk or go through what I did with them.

If you are only putting up a blog site that is always politically correct and only sells flowers or shows cat pictures, then Godaddy will let you do that without causing a hassle. I can't promise that they'll leave you alone if you do anything else, especially if their "friends" consider you to be competition to what they have, and they call in a "favor" to delete your work, your web site, or create problems for you that are downright illegal and should never be there to begin with.

For 5 years (from 2000-2005) I ran my own web hosting company and on-site datacenter in the United States, so I find Godaddy to be the most despicable internet company I have ever had to deal with. The games that they play and the dirty tricks that they pull might get past the majority of their customers, but they are not going to get past the people who have run their own hosting and know what they are doing to people. They had absolutely no desire or interest to fix what they did to my other business until I threatened to sue them over it, and they knew I would win just with what I was willing to let them know I had to present in the case aa court case against them for this.

I've dealt with thousands of companies over the past 15 years with some good and some bad. You roll with the changes and do what you do, and most are understanding of that and business in general. Godaddy is in a league of its own though...at the bottom of the barrel. If someone asked me to describe Godaddy in just two words, I would say: Never again.

@moneyman
You have made an excellent post what I was looking to say and their domain plan too sucks. I am still not getting why these company wants a bad reputation in the market? Every hosting company tries to offer good services to the client what they said on their website.
If I am going to purchase a new domain, then sure to get a hosting plan for testing it.

I think namecheap has the lowest priced hosting package. You can get a shared hosting for $9.88 per year with 5 GB bandwith. namecheap is also a domain registrar, I bought my domain for $1 a year, however I am not sure whether you can still get domain name for $1 or not.

There are some of the hosting plans that you can use under 10$. For example your 6 months hosting can be under 10$. And some hosting can also give you free domain. So you may want to check those hosts out. Register domain for cheap with godaddy or namecheap. And then use hosting like infinityfree and the x10hosting. That should get you started.
