Spare5 Overview
Spare5 is a GPT site and iOS App that pays its community members to perform various micro tasks on behalf of its clients. One of the company's main functions is to use human skills in training artificial intelligence (AI) models to be more intelligent. Spare5 has worked with some of the well known brands such as Microsoft, IBM, Sentient Technologies, GoPro, Pinterest, and Expedia.

Getting Started
Anyone age 18 and over can create an account with Spare5. Registration can be done through one of several social media accounts or by email address. After account creation, you will be required to provide some basic information such as age, gender and address. This information will be used to pair you with available tasks. These tasks can be completed either by logging into their website or by using the App which currently only available for iOS devices.

The Tasks
Tasks are sectioned into the following categories:

Assess Language
Here you will be listening to audio voice recordings and describing the content, tone, meaning, and speaker attitude.

Annotate Images
This task requires viewing images and labeling the different elements.

Isolate Elements
For this task you will be selecting the edges of elements to separate them from the rest of the image.

Provide Keywords
This task is simply tagging photos using appropriate keywords. This information is used to train computers on how to interpret images.

The Pay System
The minimum payout is set at $1. This setting can be adjusted on the dashboard of your account if you desire to be paid at a larger amount. Payments are sent via PayPal every Friday.

Referral System
Under the Refer-a-Friend program, you can earn up to $20. Every time your referral earns $10, you will receive a $2 bonus, and the referral will receive $1. This will continue until they have earned their first $100 or through their first 180 days. Your referral link will be activated when you have received $10 in payouts.

I am on Spare5 and have cashed out many times when the threshold was $1. Now with the new cashout limit being $5 I have slacked down my efforts but the rest of my circle members are still able to earn $5 or even $10 depending on the availability of tasks. It is a legit site.

When the cashout was put at one dollar I still find it hard reaching payout. Some tasks there are of quite low pay and I wasn't motivated to go the site often that significantly affected my earnings. I like to think there are more and better paying jobs now that payout is $5.

Spare5 is a microtask site that pays users to complete various tasks. It doesn't require any certified skills, but to start doing tasks you must complete all the tutorials and qualifiers first.
For each task you get XP and money, XP serves to enable you to get access to more tasks.
Spare5 has it's own internal site platform to perform those tasks so don't worry about having the right programmes in your PC. It's also available on smartphones for surveys and app testing.
The most common tasks that pop up, is coming up with keywords for tagging photos, categorising photos, and marking photos for pavements and road markings, and then there's the review task, where you review other people's work.
So if you don't do the task right, your reviewer will fail it and your earnings on that particular task will be retracted. If you fail enough times, or haven't completed any such task in a while, they might make you take the qualifier again.

It used to pay a lot more before it was bought out by Mighty AI, so now tasks are at 1-2 cents each. Personally I pick the quickest ones to fly through them.

I tried this for a while but was really hopeless at completing some of these tasks. I don't think it's really my thing and I started to feel bad about it. I understand we can't be good at everything so I decided to give it up. The money wasn't that great so it isn't a great loss to me. I will leave it to those of you who excel at this kind of thing ;)

so how much money can one realistically make on a site like that?

Ok, let's talk numbers:
Things used to be much better.
Realistically after Spare5 was bought out most tasks are awarded 1 cent each, with the exception of image tagging and painting superpixels which award 2 cents each. Just to reach weekly payout you'll need to earn 5$ from Wednesday to Wednesday. That's 500 tasks of the cheaper kind.
The task traffic isn't always consistent but if you refresh often or happen at a time where there's a lot of tasks, which is usually morning for the USA and night for Asia, you'll be able to make $5 in a one or two hours at high task traffic. The better you are at tasking the more tasks come your way, because Spare5 prioritises good and frequent users.

They also award 1 buck for every 5 payed out, if you were referred, both to you as well as to your referrer, and that's still the case if you manage to find a referral link. Here's an issue: They erased all of our referral links saying "You have to be exceptional to refer people", to cut expenses through eliminating referral trains. I don't know if old referral links work or if anyone at all has been eligible a new one after the buyout, but for any person registered through a referral the above awards still stand.

Looks like they are trying to clamp down on referrals. Is this only app based? When I have time I will take a look and if someone wants to PM a referral link, I will try and see if it works.

This sounds like what Crowdsource were doing, but they would pay weekly whatever amount you earned.

They are both app & desktop available, however some kinds of tasks are only available via app (like surveys and app testing), and others are easier to do on desktop, like reviewing or outlining things.

Previously their referral system allowed a minor referral "train" profit to happen. The top referrer would benefit from the earnings the medium referrers had when they cashed out, because the bonus wasn't based on task earnings but the total payout amount. Judging by how generous the referral bonus was, farming the train could set the site back economically.

Compared to Crowdflower, I prefer Spare 5. It used to pay a mininum of $1 back then, but it has gone up to $5. I have no negative reviews on the site other than the number of tasks avaialble.

Hi. I joined spare5 before when it was new. The rules and tasks are easy but after some time the tasks becomes hard to do. And it takes time and effort to level up your account.

Compared to Crowdflower, I prefer Spare 5. It used to pay a mininum of $1 back then, but it has gone up to $5. I have no negative reviews on the site other than the number of tasks avaialble.
But I heard spare5 have few tasks now. Better to use scale, its similar with spare5.

I have been paid several times on spare5. I can even reach or exceed the $5 minimum payout but right now task are getting pretty rare maybe because of newcomers the community became big due to the referral thing or some other things. Might not make the payout this week . Task goes very fast right now that's why earning on spare5 is pretty hard now.

I think so. I remember when some of my friends share their payment proofs which the highest I saw was more than $80. While some has gone down with their earnings. I haven't tried Scale API yet, but as I'll buy a new laptop, I will try that one.

When I first joined Spare5 I found the site to be quite fun. It was a bit different from those sites that I have been on and liked the activities that I was doing over there. However even after completing the tutorials I was not given any new tasks and left the site. I have not been on there ever since.

I would like to give this site a try. Making $5 in an hour or two seems like a deal. Judging from what everyone has said, I guess chasing tasks will be the deciding factor to earn.

it would be hard to achieve $5 in an hour on spare5 right now due to fewer task and lots of competition. but maybe after what they said on their last Live Question and Answer portion on YouTube. That they will try to remove the thing where you will have 1-2 task then it will suddenly disappear. then maybe after that there will be smoother tasking.

Try it there's nothing to lose and they legitimately pay.

When I first joined Spare5, the minimum to cash out was $1 and that was very easy to reach. In fact there was a few times that I had accrued over $30 in the week. However, it seems that the number of tasks have diminished extensively making it hard to reach the new $5 minimum. I have basically stopped working on it since they changed the minimum since there were not any tasks on there for me to do. I am just thankful for the money that I did make off of it once upon a time.

That time $1 is easy to reach, when I first joined scale the tasks are easy to finished and I already received the $1 payment but after that I stopped it because of the hard qualifications that needs to finish.
