What is Cryptojacking.jpg

What
Cryptojacking is the secret use of a computing device to mine the digital cash.

Who
Hackers use malicious softwares that focuses on stealing
cryptocurrency wallets or mining, and Sites use in-browser JavaScript to mine in the background.

How
JavaScript runs on all website, so in-browser mining code start working instantly when their web-page is loaded. Even Hackers have injected the scripts into other websites; some affected sites are CBS Showtime, UFC live-streams and even some official government websites.

Why
Apat from criminals, now due to Adblockers, many legit websites have also started using this way for their revenue.

Protection:-
Block such sites;
Use proper browsers which checks Java Script,
Repeatedly check the running tasks in your device,
Never compromise with your internet-security, there is no fake alert about malicious softwares.

But it is upto users themselves; if you talk about crypto earnings, then you will find "suggestions" from other people to remove your anti virus or keep the site allowed; this is how they fool people and make mining possible.

Alright @Emill duly. noted.I use avast anti virus the free version and it does work for me ,maybe I could search for a better one or better still suggest one. prevention is the best bet.

Using better browser which blocks coinhive and yet the antivirus, antimalware protection, this will keep your PC safe from cryptojacking; just like this.

This is scary cos there are some sites that demand our wallet addtress to sign up and start claiming faucet. Hope given out wallet address won't wallets to be hacked?
There should be no worries about hacking just by giving out your public address.
What you should never give is your private key, only with it the coins can be spent.

to be honest I believe avast free antivirus is actually the only good free solution out there. I'm also using it and I'm pretty satisfied and I don't feel the need for more. I haven't had any problems with it

I think so too because I have been using it for years now and I have not had problems with you,it really good and effective and the good thing is the fact that it is totally free.

To stop cryptojacking, Chrome has also launched a tiny browser extension by the name of "No coin" that aims to block coin miners such as Coinhive; we can use it too.

unfortunately, while checking reviews for all those extensions, I noticed none of them blocks every mining script.. I mean all of them let a mining script do its job from time to time.. But I guess it's still better than letting all the existing scripts do their job

This is a reason why it is advised that never compromise with internet security for PC; scammers will lure you in claiming that anti-virus alert are fake; while the truth is that their links are mining which antivirus pervent.

Has anyone actually used the "No coin" extension by Chrome? How effective is it? I just heard about cryptojacking and it really worries me..

I have my antivirus (ESET NOD32) on all the time but I don't know if it is enough to block everything.

Other than the computer heating up and running slower, what are some other signs of cryptojacking? If I've been affected, I'd want to know right away so I can find a way to stop it.

Better is to check the running tasks in the task manager of your computer, it will inform if any site is using much of CPU, if yes, then you can close and avoid that site.

My anti-virus blocked something last night with the name "crypto-loot", which I suspect is cryptojacking. Funny thing is, I wasn't even on any sites related to cryptocurrencies (no faucets either) at that time. I then went to Google it and even Googling it set off my anti-virus... I'm going to download that No Coin extension for Chrome and pray that it works. Don't want another scare.

Hi, @Miya , good you took it immediately; however have you got a screenshot of that alert? If you had it, then it could be easier to understand how that was going to work.

I didn't take a screenshot of it because I quickly closed all my windows and tabs in fear of being infected. But if I simply do a search on "crypto loot", the same alert from my antivirus will pop-up. It's like even the keywords trigger the alert..

CryptoLoot is a cheap coinhive alternative Javascript miner for Monero, it have low fees and have faster hashrates. Just blocking coinhive won't help, better block all unwitting mining.

Update information

In India, more than 2,000 computers of various group companies were found targeted by cryptojacking attack. Employees of Aditya Birla Group (One of the largest Indian company) have found out that the cryptojacking was happening since last month. Now business business conglomerates are going to fight with this also.
